DENVER, CO (EDUCAUSE 2012) – November 6, 2012 – Telerik, an end-to-end provider of software application, lifecycle and content management solutions, today announced that its customer, National Network of Digital Schools (NNDS), is now delivering a dynamic and powerful learning experience for students by converting from a traditional online learning system to Sitefinity CMS. With thousands of pages of content and game instances, and hundreds of hours of video, NNDS needed a flexible, easy-to-use authoring environment that could house a massive amount of content. But it also needed it to be flexible enough to handle a uniquely tailored, interactive learning experience.
“With Sitefinity, delivering custom functionality did not require a large development resource. Our team of eight-strong in-house developers built and launched the system in less than a year,” said Danielle Verba, software design manager, National Network of Digital Schools. “This included integration with existing infrastructure—Active Directory, a CRM and a grade-book system—as well as deployment to the company’s own datacenter. Although we did not know Sitefinity before starting this project, we’re pleased to have them working with us now.”
Through Sitefinity, pages are created, edited, and styled in the WYSIWYG page editor, with no coding skills required. Online courses are composed by simply dragging and dropping one of the 50 custom widgets developed by NNDS’s in-house team. "Widgets include Student Explanation, which provides details on what the student is doing and why it is important; Supplies, which details what materials are needed to complete the lesson's activities; and Vocabulary that displays vocabulary-related information to the students. The course author creates the list of vocabulary words and optionally provides additional information such as the definition and pronunciation of the word. The student can then click on an icon next to each word in the widget to locate and highlight that vocabulary term throughout the lesson text in order to gain context and understanding.
With Sitefinity, NNDS is able to:
- Ensure consistency: When a page has been created, it passes from authors to reviewers, who use a custom Comments widget to add notes during the revision process. When editors publish the page, it remains invisible to subscribers until it has passed final quality assurance.
- Manage high volumes of content: With some courses running into the thousands of pages, setting up the framework for a course is a challenge in itself. However, Sitefinity automatically creates the page structure for a course which the content authors then edit and populate, which saves both time and effort.
“NNDS’s Lincoln Interactive curriculum offers an array of options for students and teachers with more than 280 fully-accredited courses that span pre-school to high school,” said Martin Kirov, executive vice president, Sitefinity. “However, traditional online learning systems didn’t accommodate the dynamic learning experiences envisioned by Lincoln Interactive educators. Sitefinity meets this unique challenge because of its intuitive and flexible authoring environment that accommodates new and creative ideas.”
