What’s new in Sitefinity 7.0 – A look at the product roadmap

by Tim Williamson

With the upcoming product release of Sitefinity 7.0 getting closer, the roadmap has just recently been made available. Let’s take a quick look at some of the key features and explore the benefits of each.

Custom Fields for Pages

Developers can now create custom fields for their Sitefinity pages. These fields can be used to add additional functionality and further control how the pages of a site are rendered. Because they’re created and managed through the Sitefinity UI, they’re easy for users to modify.

HTML5 Video Player

Having multimedia content on your website is an important way to engage your visitors. Making that content easy to play without the need for additional browser extensions or plug-ins is equally important. Sitefinity is switching over to the RadMediaPlayer for displaying video which enables us to do just that. Bye-bye Silverlight!

Migrate Single Sitefinity Instances to a Multisite Instance

As the number of sites you need to manage increases, even simple content changes can become a burden. The multisite functionality of Sitefinity eliminates that issue but, what if you’ve already got multiple, separate sites? Well, we’re now able to migrate those sites into one multisite installation. One instance. One login. Zero hassle.

Create Relationships between Related Content

Displaying content that’s related to what your visitors are interested in helps them to quickly find other relevant information on your site. Sitefinity now allows content authors to create relationships between content and get it in front of the people who are most likely to be interested in it.

Add Media Fields as Custom Fields to Built-in Modules

This feature makes linking media content (images, documents and videos) to out-of-the-box content painless. By adding custom media fields to Sitefinity content, you can implement some pretty cool stuff like:

  • Thumbnail images
  • Downloadable documents
  • Links to audio versions of your content

Duplicate Page Templates and Forms

A lot of work goes into getting your page templates and forms just right. Sometimes it’s necessary to create new versions that address new requirements which used to mean creating a whole new item and re-creating the look of the original. Now, we’re able to directly duplicate those assets from the UI. Since the page content and form fields get automatically re-created in the new version, modifying base templates and forms to fit specific requirements just got a lot easier.

Ecommerce Product Ratings and Reviews

Sitefinity Ecommerce gets another major enhancement, product ratings and reviews. Customers are now able to review and rate the products that are on the site.

Sort and Filter Content in Dynamic Modules

In the past, locating content inside dynamic modules was slightly less than simple. I’m happy to say that those days are now over. With built-in sorting and filtering, finding specific items inside custom modules is more streamlined.

There’s a lot more coming in the Sitefinity 7.0 release. I encourage you to visit Sitefinity’s product roadmap and check out the awesomeness for yourself.

Can you give some examples of how we could utilize the Custom Fields for pages and for Relationships for Related content?

Will 7 support Visual Studio 2013?

This is awesome but what's going to happen if you upgrade from 6.2 when you've already done major customization to the Events module to create all those selectors for related content and related events?

Do I have to start from scratch again and rebuild my website with version 7?

What about QTVR file support in version 7.0?

Will there be any changes to the Search function? Right now, we can't do any searches based on user permission out of the box so member only pages and documents that we don't want the public to know about show up in their search results.

Echoing Max's question - is Search going to get a face-lift soon, or do we still have to customize to get member-only pages/documents/etc?

What happened to the "Migrate your site from Sitefinity 3.7 SP4 to the newest version" link?  Is it not supported anymore?
