    Hi,

I have a website that I upgraded from Beta 2 to Beta 3 which all seemed to go fine now the problem I am having is in Templates (Admin/Templates.aspx) management section of Beta 3 all the templates show a 404 error in the Preview pane on the right and the same if I try and Edit the template.  I have tried in vain to find what is causing this compared to a Website that was created using the Project Manager.... I checked the IIS configuration for the folder but the .master extension is registered correctly... so I am hoping you can figure out what is going wrong....sorry I can't give more info that this but there really isn't much else...

    Thanks
    Sean

    Hello Sean,

Please, check if there is a mapping for .template extension in the IIS project. It should reference to the aspnet_isapi.dll and should not check if the file exists. Let me know if any problems arise.

    Best wishes,

    Hi Vassil,

Thank you for resolving that for me, I didn't even notice that it was a .template extension.  How is that going to work on shared servers that don't give you access to modifying those ISAPI mappings?

Secondly there is a small bug with the Templates if you have more than one template and you edit the template using the Templates.aspx, when you click save no matter which of the other templates you select it still only displays the one you have just edited.  So even though the postback occurs the click event doesn't occur.

If that isn't clear let me know and I can give you step by step instructions.

    Thanks
    Sean

    Hi Sean,

Actually, we are still experiencing some problems with shared hosting and at this stage it is with lower priority and not our straight developing direction. Of course, if you can think of a solution, we would be glad to hear it.

The bug in the templates section is already fixed and you will not experience problems with the next Sitefinity update. Fortunately there is a workaround for it.

    Hi Vassil,

Thank you for the work around, I had already figured out that myself, I just missed Len's post so didn't read that you knew about the problem already.

It is a shame to hear that shared hosting isn't high on your priorities, I completely understand why have done this, but it would have been nice to know about this before I started trying to upgrade some of my sites that are hosted on shared hosting, I am hoping that some of the things will work on the less strict hosts.  Could you please let me know what sort of issues I will need to check with the hosts to check that Sitefinity 3 will work on their shared servers.....

    Regards
    Sean

    Hi Sean,

I am sorry to say that support for shared hosting will not make it into the RC. Perhaps not for the official release either. I cannot give you specific list for shared hosting issues as we are in the process of testing and we are still experiencing many problems deploying projects on a shared hosting environment. Probably Sitefinity will work on a less strict host environment but we cannot be certain that it will behave properly. Perhaps you can provide us with the problems you are experiencing so we could address the most common shared hosting problems and see what we can do.

    Thanks in advance,
    Vassil Daskalov

Huh? How will this effect our clients using webhost4life.com hosting? They are quite flexible with regard to configuration. Is there anyway to make this work without forcing our clients to purchase dedicated server hosting.

This sounds like a deal breaker.

    Hi Vassil,

Thank you for your reply.  I haven't had any problems with hosting yet as I haven't put a test site up but I am going in the next few days, so I will let you know once I have tested what does and doesn't work.  I think we should then compile a list of hosts that do and do not work so that people can then make educated decisions about what hosting solutions to use.   That is of course until you can find ways around any of the problems.

    Regards
    Sean

    Hi Vassil,

I have had a chance to test a couple of shared hosts.  Unfortunately at this stage for all concerned they are both Australian hosts, I haven't had an opportunity to test any US servers yet.  I have had mixed results.

The first was StudioCoast who I had no issues with whatsoever and they happily added the template mapping for me.

The second was ExpressNet who have been extremely helpful with me on this, they allowed me to run my site in Full Trust but at their default which is Medium trust it doesn't work at all I just get a Security Exception.  They were asking is there any work around that could be implemented so that we could get it to work under Medium trust, you said that already there is none at this stage but I thought I would double check.

If you have time could you explain what it is the Sitefinity uses that breaks this trust?  It would just be helpful to know this information to help the hosts understand that your application is safe on Full Trust?

    Thanks
    Sean

    Hi Sean,

One of the issues was that Nolics engine was not marked with AllowPartiallyTrustedCallersAttribute. It will be with the next update. I hope that there won’t be any other issues on their behalf. On our behalf we have quite a few. Mainly, our issues  have to do with reflection. Not all types of reflection are allowed in Medium trust. Also, we are creating design time environment when editing the pages which is not typical for web applications. We are currently working on resolving these issues but the process is slow as we solve one problem we run into the next one.

    Hi Bob,

Thank you for you very clear answer, this information will certainly help me show the hosts that we aren't trying to do anything to hack into their system.  I did suspect that it had something to do with reflection.  Well they seem to have been flexible enough for me so lets hope it stays that way.  In the meant time good luck with ironing out those problems!

    Thanks
    Sean
