    using the instructions here:

    http://www.sitefinity.com/help/developer-manual/built-in-spam-protector-strategies.html

    I've place the spam control on the page and set the expiration to 90 minutes. My backend code checks the validation group for the spam control.

    Page.Validate(Vgroup);
    if (Page.IsValid)

    No matter how quickly I fill out the form it always says that the Captcha session expired.

    is there something further I need to do to get this working that wasn't in the instructions?

    Nevermind I figured it out. I had Causesvalidation set to true on my button which means it was trying to validate twice which was causing issues. In case anyone else is having the same issue, if you validate in the code turn off causesvalidation in the button properties.
