First, I'm new to SiteFinity (and to diving deep into .NET code), so please forgive some of my ignorance.  I downloaded my copy of SiteFinity on 3/29, and installed SiteFinity_3_2_SP1_standard.exe, but am working against the extract of Sitefinity_3_2_1526_standard_BlankProject.zip for my project (also downloaded on 3/29).  I'm assuming both these files have the patches.

My problem is that I have created 4 categories of news.  On my home page, I've added a news content element that is only supposed to display two of the four news categories.  However, when I view the page it is showing news items from all categories.

Is this a bug that is similar to some of the other blog and news issues I've read about, or something different?  If so, could someone point a newbie to the best post that has the step-by-step?

    TIA,
    Linda

    Hi Linda,

It does indeed sound similar to the blog issues:

    http://www.sitefinity.com/support/forums/support-forum-thread/b1043S-bckhge.aspx

I, like you, feel like I might be doing something wrong in how I'm setting the pages up.  Hopefully we'll get to the bottom of it soon.

    Hi Linda,

Unfortunately, we cannot reproduce the described behavior. Please go to edit page mode and check if the CategoryKey property of the NewsList control has the same value as the CategoryKey property of the CategoriesList control. Category key is used for passing data in the QueryString when the category link is clicked and this is the reason why it should be the same for the related controls. This property could be found in the Behavior section of the control Property window.

Also, you should set the CategoriesList's ProviderName property to News.

Do let us know if this is issue.

    All the best,
    Pepi

The category key value is CntCatID.  How do I see what the value is for the categorylist?    When I look at my news items they are each in a single category.  The NewsList control for the home page when I edit shows:
     - from the Basic tab the radio button is selected for "Display only news in specific categories " and only 2 of the 4 categories are checked.

    In the Advanced Tab:
    The Category Key is CntCatID
    The Provider Name is News
The Selected Categories are General;HSFM Watchdog (two if the 4 categories I created)

Like I said, I'm new to this, so guidance on where to find the info to help troubleshoot would be very helpful!  Thanks,

    Linda

I can not wait for service pack since the release dates vary so much for them. I have projects that are ready to go live, but can not due to minor issues like this.  Please post a patch or give a work around.

    Hi medicalwebgeek,

Unfortunately, we are not able to provide a hotfix so far. There are many things that have changed in the code and in the News List control.

We are really sorry for this inconvenience.

Hi, I have found a solution to the categories issue in NewsList control, just set FilterExpression = Category=CategoryName

    Hi Carlos,

Unfortunatly that didn't worked for me. Did you also have good results with a multilangual project with your solution?

It's absolutely REDICULOUS that Telerik isn't providing a hotfix for this immediately for such an OBNOXIOUS, obvious bug.  The workaround using the filter doesn't work for me.

I purchased 5 Sitefinity licenses that are all currently in production, but I'll seriously reconsider building more sites on this product if Telerik doesn't start supporting it better than this.

Sorry Telerik, people that make their living building websites can't wait weeks or months for you to fix such high-profile bugs.

First off I agree - this fix (provided by gce) could even be noted in the knowledge base.  It worked for me (3.2.1 - IIS 6 - Windows 2003 - SQL Server 2005 (full & express)).

Second - this one caught me the first time so I am just going to put it out there - did you change Category=CategoryName "CategoryName" to match the name of the category you are trying to filter?  The first time I tried it I forgot to do that.

Oh man...I have to eat crow on that one.  That's exactly what I did...changed "CategoryName" to the actual category name worked.  I was in too much of a hurry...thanks!

Agree completely on point #1--this is a recurring problem I've noticed with Sitefinity support--there will be some sort of problem, and often a fix or workaround can be found in the forums and acknowledged by Sitefinity--but nothing done to update the original documentation or knowledge base.

I truly hope these are just growing pains...Sitefinity is, on the whole, a good product, but clearly Telerik needs to put some more support resources on the payroll to help the current support staff out a little.

    Dear Brett and all,

Thanks for the valuable suggestions and discussion. We are glad to see the Sitefinity Community in action!

We are working to provide a fix of the problem you posted. Meanwhile, you can use the workaround proposed in this thread. Let us know if doesn’t work for all of you and we need to investigate it further.

To address your concern on the documentation - Brett, you are right in suggesting that these are growing pains. What we have done in the past few months was to add more support people to our team. Also, we started a strategic project focused on improving the documentation and troubleshooting resources.

We hope to be able to show some visible results in the coming months.
Needless to say, your suggestions and feedback on that topic are welcome!

    Best Regards,
    Kalina
