    Hi,

I have installed Sitefinity 4.0 RC on my system. I want to upgrade my Sitefinity 3.7 site to 4.0 using Migration Utility. I am following the steps metioned in http://sitefinitymigration.codeplex.com/documentation. But i am neither able to locate Telerik.Localization dll at RC setup nor with Migration code. Please suggest where i can get the dlls associated with Telerik.Localization

i am receiving following error while building migration utility

Error 1 The type or namespace name 'Localization' does not exist in the namespace 'Telerik' (are you missing an assembly reference?) F:\Sitefinity4\Migration Latest 12122010\MigrationExportService\MigrationExportService.cs 23 15 MigrationExportService

    Hi Sham,

Telerik.Localization.dll is part of Sitefinity 3.x edition and it is available only in the standard edition. If you use our community version for 3.x, you need to modify the code from codeplex.

Now I am able to migrate the site from 3.7 to 4.0 using the CodePlex Migration utility but none of my user controls, images are migrated to 4.0 i am getting folowing message when i clicking on get counts button on migration page.

    Importing normal page "Chapter Center"
Skipping adding ASP.usercontrols_chapters_chaptermanagementcontrol_ascx to container MainContentAreaPlaceHolder - not supported.
Adding Generic content block to container TitlePlaceHolder.

    Importing normal page "My Chapters"
Skipping adding to container Content - not supported.
Skipping adding ASP.usercontrols_chapters_mychapters_ascx to container MainContentAreaPlaceHolder - not supported.
Adding Generic content block to container TitlePlaceHolder.

whether we are supporting migration of usercontrols(ascx controls) with the migration utility or not? or is this something we need to implement?

    Hi Sham,

Today we checked in a new version where the .ascx controls are copied to the target site along with codebehind files. We are trying to add these controls in the pages now, but it is very unlikely they would work properly as they might be using the old 3.7 API and namespaces which will result in issues in 4.0 edition.

    Hi Ivan,

I'm working with Sham to migrate a 3.7-based Sitefinity sample site to Sitefinity 4.0 in conjunction with your new release. We have a lot of ASP.NET-based ascx user controls on the site that we want to port forward with the migration tool if possible. We want to avoid manually adding each control as a widget if we can help it.

Since those controls do not include any references to the 3.7 API and namespaces, do you expect that they should continue to function in Sitefinity 4.0? These are generic ASP.NET controls that work in a variety of CMS solutions today.

Thanks in advance for your help,
    Andrew

    Hello Sham,

Generally there should not be a problems with the standard ASP.NET controls. We had some issues related to the session, but we fixed them for the RC2 release. If there are some issues, please share them with me so I could see whether there is some bug in 4.0 that we can fix and make your controls working properly.

    Hi Sham,

The current change set - 5376 - has some support for migrating user controls. It tries to copy the .ascx  and code behind of the control to the same location in your 4.0 project, but since the code-behind from your 3.7 project may contain calls to the old 3.7 API, I first try to parse the control to see if it compiles against the 4.0 project and if it doesn't I replace the <%@ Register %> on the top of the control by stripping the CodeBehind, etc attributes.

Automated moving of custom controls and code is very tough and I'm not sure at what extent it will work. The source code of the tool is open source and you can tweak it additionally to parse some custom data or wrap any methods.

    Hi,

Sham and his team have downloaded the latest change set for the Migration Tools, but this version skips our user controls entirely with a message that reads:
"Skipping adding [control path] to container [container name] - not supported."

The earlier version tried to copy the control over even though it didn't load properly. With that earlier version, we had to remove the incorrect entry and redrop the control on the page to get it to function.

Since our controls don't reference the Sitefinity 3.7, will the migration tool support migrating these controls to the new Sitefinity 4.0 site? For the sake of our sample site, we could readd the controls manually, but a manual upgrade like this will be challenging for any of our clients who want to move from 3.7 to 4.0.

Thanks in advance for your assistance,
    Andrew

    Hi Sham,

Yesterday we released a new version (0.5 Alpha) of the migration tool. It will attempt to copy your .ascx custom controls with their code-behind files to the new 4.0 site location. Please, check it and let us know if it works for you.

    Hi Lupi,

After tweaking following areas of migration utility

    1.       Instead of returning false on private bool ImportPages() function I continued importing my pages

    2.       public static void AddPermissionForEveryone<CT>(IList<CT> controls, PageManager pageManager) catch object reference error and logged it as  MigrationLogger.AppendLogMessage("<b class=\"ErrorMessage\">" + ex.Message + "</b>");

       3. Changed other Places to fix some issues

the utility worked and imported the controls but I am facing few issues with migrated site

    1.       My theme is not migrated and the pages are displayed without any theme

    2.       Most of my controls are using another control as reference but those are commented out in migration site as below. Due to this none of my user control working properly. Any reason behind commenting out this code? I am having hundreds of user control and uncommenting and testing this out would be little cumbersome .

    <%-- <%@ Register TagPrefix="uc1" TagName="CartGrid" Src="CartGrid.ascx" %> --%>

    <%-- <%@ Register TagPrefix="cc1" Namespace="Framework.Web.eBusiness" Assembly="EBusinessUser" %> --%>

    3.       For some controls I am getting error as

Error adding ~/UserControls/Web_Articles/WebArticles.ascx to placeholder NewsList
Error message: External component has thrown an exception.

    Error migrating control of type Telerik.Search.WebControls.SearchBox, Telerik.Search, Version=3.2.1747.3, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=dfeaee0e3978ac79 - not supported

Thank you in advance for looking into this. let me know your comments.

    Sham

    Hi Sham,

    Thank you for your input.

Is your theme in ~/App_Themes/<Theme Name> ? Do you have read permissions in this folder for your ASP.NET worker account? The migration utility is somewhat defensive when reading files from the hard drive and if it doesn't have enough permissions it simply moves on.

The custom controls'  register tags are commented because currently I'm treating all controls as .ascx custom controls with codebehind. I try to create an instance of the user control and if it throws an exception I move them to a "black list" of controls, which basically means that if I include them in a placeholder of a page from the 4.0 project, the whole page will fail to load, even in the backend.

    In your case -

    <%@ Register TagPrefix="uc1" TagName="CartGrid" Src="CartGrid.ascx" %>

Apparently CardGrid.ascx is not "safe" for 4.0 - that is - it has codebehind code that uses for example some API calls from the 3.7 API which cannot be used in 4.0 directly.

I could make this an option that can be overwritten in the next version of the migration tool, but I'm not sure if I will be able to programmatically add a custom control to a page/template placeholder without throwing an error. I will have to investigate that with the rest of the Sitefinity team.

As for these 2 error messages - they are not actually errors - they are rather content blocks with a red color styled HTML content that states the reason why the control couldn't be added.

Your WebArticles.ascx throws an exception which seems to be related to some code in your control. The Telerik.Search.WebControls.SearchBox control from 3.7 is not yet supported by the migration tool as it is very different from its 4.0 version.

    Hi Lupi,

I have given full control to 'everyone' for the telerik folder and its subfolders still its not copied over. what about the bin folder? are we migrating that?

About the commenting Register tag i am not sure if i understood it clearly but by just commenting Register tag would not compile the page.  eg. if uc1 is referred in other areas of page that will still result into error. i think we are not handling this in the migration utility.  Once the control is migrated we should uncomment the register tag as well.

    Regards

    Sham

    Hello Sham,

The migration tool does not migrate the bin folder yet. I'm not really sure how to handle this. Assemblies there might be built against the old sitefinity .dll files and when copying them to the 4.0 project there will be missing references.

As for the custom controls and commenting the Register tag - there are some issues when adding custom controls to page placeholders - this is the reason I'm rewriting the Register tag. I'll need to investigate this more thoroughly and hopefully by the end of the week I'll release a new version 0.6 where this issue will be handled appropriately.

    Kind regards,
    Lupi

    Hi All,

I am working on migrating Sitefinity 3.7 to Sitefinity 4.0, i have downloaded new version for migration tool on Feb/09/11 and migrated my project successfully, except few controls got migrate and few not,  when i view my page through sitefinity http://localhost/My_sitename/sitefinity/Pages i got Usercontrols id in place of usercontrols, no uc are visible on any page.
Can you please guide me to figure out what is the loaction of usercontrols with in Sitefintiy site. i want to check the id of uc, i am not able to figure out which id is for which usercontrol, i tried to find uc by editing it, but there is no UI, there is just a name of usercontrol, Edit mode is not user friendlly. I also want to check uc in database, please tell me in which table usercontrols get saved.

    Thanks

    Hi Andrew,

You might need to manually copy the user controls - e.g. the .ascx and .ascx.cs files. The migration tool tries to copy the controls that are referenced inside master pages, but if you have control inside of a control this case is not supported as it is too cumbersome to parse recursively .ascx files.

    hi Lupi,

    Thanks for reply.
I am using Component Art controls (Date-Time picker, Menus) in my Sitefinity 4.0 project, when I load those pages (where i used component Art controls), I am getting error. (Please find attachment for error message).
please let me know, why this error is coming and how to resolve it.

My another question is, can I apply skin on Template and pages in Sitefinity 4.0 ? if yes then how ?  i have gone through document and I didn’t found any topic related to skin.

In new Sitefinity 4.0, are you not using .aspx extension in urls ? do I have to remove .aspx, if I had hard coded url within page somewhere.
    for example: Home.aspx

    Thanks Regards

    Hello Andrew,

The error you are getting indicates some issue with the MS AJAX. Most probably you can some script or the other control you use causes this issue. It could be related to the MS AJAX that the other controls you have use.

As for the skinning and changing the appearance, please check our designers guide

    hi Ivan,

Please find attachment, i have a page open position, its property "Show in navigation" is unchecked, but still page is visible in navigation. I checked it in sitefinity 3.7, if it is unchecked for particular page then that page is not visible in navigation and if its checked page is visible.

Please let me know is this a bug or there is some other way to set page visible or invisible in Navigation.

I am facing one more problem, I have gone through document to find out "how to apply skin", there is topic on "how to apply theme" but not for skin, I am using skin for grids, please let me know how i can apply skin too.

    Hello,

    1. The first issue was a bug in old version of Sitefinity 4.0. It should not appear in the latest internal build.
    2. Currently there is an issue with custom skins and you should inject your css classes in the theme stylesheet or load them on a page through another css.

    hi Ivan,

    Thanks for reply.
For second issue i.e. Skin not applied, I have registered my theme in Sitefinity by following all the steps given in documentation. my Theme folder includes all css, images and skin too. then I applied that theme on my templates, everything is working fine, css is applied, Images are visible but even though skin is within same theme folder it is not applied on grids.

Folder structure is same in Sitefinity 3.7 as I have in Sitefinity 4.0, ie all css, Images and skin is in same Theme folder and its working fine with Sitefinity 3.7.

Can you please guide me, what steps i have to follow to inject skin (not css) or load them on a page through another css.

    Thanks

    Hello Andrew,

The issue with the skin files is not fixes. You just have to add the css classes in the theme stylesheet, so that they will apply over the controls you have on your page.
