We are having problems playing video in Sitefinity 3.6.  We have uploaded a .wmv file to the library, and put the Video control on a page.  The thumbnail was created and shows up in the list.  When you click on the links and the page refreshes, nothing plays.  If you click in the area where the player should be, you see an outline appear.  if you right-click in that area, the little Silverlight button appears.

Does anybody know why the player won't show up and play the video?

If any further details are needed, please let me know.

    Thanks,
    Orion

    Hello Orion,

This may be due to problems in the Silverlight plug in. Can you please verify that your Silverlight plug in is at least ver. 2 (http://www.silverlight.net/getstarted/).

Yes, I am on the newest Silverlight 3.  To troubleshoot, I even uninstalled and reinstalled but it didn't work.  When I view other sites running Silverlight objects I can see them just fine.

When I look at the properties of the test video we're trying to use, it says "Windows Media Audio/Video file (.wmv)."  That's all I know about the file.

If you have a testing video that you know would work, would you be willing to email it to me to try?

    Hi Orion,

Can you please send us one of your non working videos? A link from where we can download a file will also work.
    Thank you in advance.

    Kind regards,

I did some further testing with other WMV files with no success.  I also used a video converter to convert .mov files to .wmv with no success.  I think it's just something in the setup of Sitefinity but I don't know what to check.

Here is a link to download a video straight from Sitefinity:

    Thanks,

    Hi Orion,

I tested your video and everything works fine.(see the attachment)
I am not sure what is wrong with you project but here are some additional things you could check

    1. Please make sure that in your IIS you have MIME type for .wmv otherwise the player will not  work
    2. Another thing is that if you have some JavaScript error thrown on the same page were the Video control is added the player will not work.
    3. You can check your site on a different computer to make sure the issue can be reproduced across different machines.

We're almost there!  We checked IIS and we had the .wmv MIME type, but my developer then realized there were 3 Silverlight MIME types we had to add.  The video player is now working in every browser except Firefox.  It is showing nothing just like before.

If you have any input on this, that would be great.

Also, how does the video module pick what to use for the thumbnail?  Does it take the first frame?  I ask because most of the videos have black thumbnails, but I've seen it work successfully on other videos.  I have a feeling these other videos start black and fade into the picture.  Does that make sense?

    Hi Orion,

The thumbnail for the video files is taken from the first frame of the video and unfortunately there is no way to change that.

About the FireFox problem can you check if the Silverlight plug-in is added for that browser - Tools -> Add-ons ->  Plug-ins. Perhaps reinstalling the plugin will help.

    Best wishes,
    Nikolai

Thank you for your assistance.  The Firefox issue was the oddest thing.  When I went back into the module I saw that the title of each video was the same as the file name that was uploaded.  I changed them to be more appropriate, and suddenly they each started working in Firefox without a problem.  Could be a coincidence, but I thought it odd just the same.

Thanks again for the assistance.  I believe all is well now.
