    Hi

    We've been developing several Sitefinity sites using SQL Server 2005 as the database, but we now find ourselves in the postion of having to move to a different hosting company due to the reluctance of our current host to add extension mappings to IIS which stops Sitefinity working correctly.

    The hosting company we're now looking at offers Virtual Servers which allows for us to have full access to IIS but the costs of adding SQL server to the hosting package more than triples the cost. So, we have decided to install a copy of SQL Server Express of our new Virtual server. However, our existing Sitefinity sites were developed using SQL Server 2005, so how do I convert these sites so they can use SQL Server 2005 express and how do I copy the SQL Server data across to Express?

    Many thanks

    Mitch

    Hello Mitch,

    1. Install SQL Server 2005 Express.
    2. Detach the database from SQL Server 2005.
    3. Copy .mdf and .ldf files in the App_Data folder of the project.
    4. Change the connection string in the project web.config to point to the new database.

    Hope this helps.

    All the best,

    Hello Monika,

    You need just to attach your Express database to SQL Server 2005:

    1. Open the SQL Server Management Studio, and then expand the database instance;
    2. Right-click Databases and then click Attach...;
    3. In the Attach Databases dialog box, to specify the database to be attached, click Add...; and in the Locate Database Files dialog box, select the disk drive where the database resides and expand the directory tree to find and select the .mdf file of the database;
    Note: Trying to select a database that is already attached generates an error.
    4. Optionally, to specify a different name for the database to attach as, enter the name in the Attach As column of the Attach Databases dialog box.

    Finally, you should change the connection string in the project web.config to point to the new database.

    Hope this helps.
