Is it possible to copy content pages from a development server to a production server without overwriting production content? Can this be easily accomplished using a tool like "Redgate SQL data compare"?

    Hello Chris,

Unfortunately, we have not used this tool and do not have any experience with comparing and merging data between databases.

    Kind regards,

    Hi Chris,

This is exactly the tool I use to migrate data between dev and production servers.

We use SQL Compare first for the schema and SQL Data Compare second for the data.

I have not had any problems with this.

Isn't there some kind of built in functionality in Sitefinity that allows you to bring over select content?  -

The procedure in the Sitefinity docs walks you through using SQL Enterprise Manager to move data between servers.

I'm sure that this would work but the RedGate tools are so much better at moving schema and data around than Enterprise Manager and Management Studio.

I can elaborate if you want more info but the best thing for you to do is download a trial from red-gate.com and see it for yourself.

    Thanks for the quick response.

We are looking for a replacement of the "SDO" tool in Microsoft CMS 2002 where you can select specific templates, postings and resource items to pull from one environment from the other.   We don't want to move all the test data we entered in dev and qa to production.  Is there any kind of functionality like this in Sitefinity?

I don't believe Sitefinity has such a feature. You can submit it as a feature request though. Telerik is always open to suggestions and I'm sure they'd love to hear from you.

The RedGate tools give you a preview of all the differences between the databases and allow you to choose specific records to include in the sync.

I've done this when syncing minor differences between dev and production. Sitefinity's schema is fairly complex so you have to take your time and make sure you are correctly grabbing records from all the tables related to the data you want to sync. It's doable, but I don't make a habit out of it.

    Hi,

It's true that we don't provide such built-in functionality in Sitefintiy.

To be honest, we haven't tried to use such tools by now, that's why we don't have any additional information or documentation.
The discussion here is pretty interesting for us, so we will keep an eye on it.
We will log this as a feature request and consider implementing it in our future releases.

    Kind regards,
    Georgi
