So,  This problem is, I believe, more to do with DiscountASP than Sitefinity, but as there are many who use DiscountASP for hosting I figured I'd post here, in hopes that someone knows what to do to mitigate the issue.

As I use the admin portion of the site every now and then (with no specific circumstance being the same) the application will "crash."  By this I mean that the host resets the security, and I am knocked out of being secured and forced to re-log in.

This is REALLY bad when editing properties for something and the crash, because after re-logging in I get a full screen of properties rather than the actual editor interface.

Does anyone know what I need to do or ask DiscountASP to do to make the application more stable?

(Again I think its a DiscountASP issue because it happens on another non-sitefinity account while in the admin portion of that site as well)

    Hi Tony,

The reason for the problems you are seeing is the shared hosting provider policy (it's not just discountAsp.NET, it's all shared hosting providers) to recycle the application every so often - when they need to free up the resources, or when the application pool memory is close to/exceeding the limit set. By default, all cookies are set to expire at the end of session and on application recycle all sessions end.

In order to work around this issue, you should instruct your users to click "Remember me" when logging in - which will make cookie expire in one day, not at the end of the session.

We suggest you taking a look at the forum thread Experiances with DiscountASP.NET as a hosting provider?. It contains some valuable information about how the users got rid of logout problem, and increased their site performance.

    Sincerely yours,

    Georgi,

The solution you've given is not good enough.  You will still be logged out after checking the "Remember Me" checkbox, if your app exceeds memory allotted to your app.

We are experiencing the same issue with a Sitefinity CMS-backed we've built for a client that is hosted on DiscountASP.NET.

We've contacted support at DiscountASP.NET about this issue and they recommend storing session state within the database:

    Hi Mike,

Have you tried setting the machine key in the web.config file? Here is some more information on this - How To: Configure MachineKey in ASP.NET 2.0.
In the forum thread which we provided in our previous post, a community member confirmed that this works for them.

    Best wishes,

I have also experience similar problems with DiscountASP.Net myself this weekend (heavy resets, really breaks a dev's will to live) ~ I am going to try to implement the suggest modifications and report back. If you guys have any other thoughts on this in the meantime, please post.

    Hello Joel,

I suggest that you should use hosting plan with 200 mb of virtual memory.

In fact, if you use DiscountASP's Windows 2008 server option it seems to be much more stable.

Thank you both for your thoughts. I did end up opting to migrate my account from Windows Server 2003 to 2008 (DiscountASP actually makes this extremely painless) and the application runs much more smoothly (no log outs so far) and the application runs a lot faster as well. Thanks for the assistance guys.

    Hello Ron,

I do not think there will be any issues with the migration. Let us know if you experience anything unusual though.
