    Hi.

I have been playing around with Sitefinity for about a couple of weeks and am already impressed by its extensibility.

However, my understanding is that in order to create multiple pages based on a template, you need to drag/drop same user controls in correct place holders to achieve the uniform layout. This may be a bit cumbersome for content authors.

Here is what I want to do: I want to create templates and add user controls to them so the content authors will just need to create pages based on that template and start adding contents in the user controls already present on the page.

I tried doing just that but was unable to make it work. For testing, I added a user control to "header footer content sidbar" template (supplied by Sitefinity) and then tried creating pages based on it. While in edit, both edit and delete buttons were missing for the user controls. While I understand that delete button should not be displayed, I expected to see edit button.

Am I missing something here? Your help is appreciated!

    Hi Nitin,

I understand what you are asking for but unfortunately this is not possible to achieve with the current version. Major improvements in this area are scheduled for version 3.2.

Let me explain how page templates currently work and what we plan to do to improve page editing.

Controls placed on a template are shared among all pages using that template. In other words, all pages use the same control instance and changes made to the control reflect immediately in all pages. In the future we plan to add control options, similar to control properties, where you can specify that the control will be created as a new instance on the page independent form the template. We are also planning to add role permissions per control, this way you will be able to set whether a user should have access to control properties or just to the control designer (edit content for example).

Your opinion and suggestions on the subject will be highly appreciated.

    Regards,
    Bob
