    Hi

We're on our first SiteFinity project, would appreciate some best practice guidance.

The website has content for branch offices which are displayed as item pages within the site (with tabbed content), also there will be an address/proximity search to filter and display a subset of the data on the site as a list and on a google map.

Would the preferable approach be to create a custom 'Branch' content control with all of the required data (i.e. lat and long, metadata properties for filtering) and use custom 'Branch View' controls to display the required data?

We would then use the content API with bespoke proximity search and the Branch content as the provider to display the list items on a list and a map.

    Is this the correct approach?

    Thanks

    Adam

    Hi Adam,

Creating a custom Branch module would be a good approach to deal with your requirement. However, you will need to manually add logic for Site Search, Permissions and Worfkflow. If you desire to use these built-in functionalities you will need to create a new Branch provider based on the Generic content and add the metakeys to that provider, this way you will be able to use all the functionalities that are available for Generic content and also use the API to deal with the provider that you created.

    Hi George

Thanks for confirming the approach, much appreciated.

The inevitable supplementary question...  Do you know if there are features in version 4 that we should be considering to achieve the same end result?

    cheers

    Hi Adam,

Since Sitefinity 4 is still in BETA I wouldn't use it to built commercial websites until there is a stable release. I think you will still have to follow the same approach in version 4 as you would in 3.7 but you can make use of the new fluent APIs which is preferable over the generic APIs.

    Hello Adam,

In Sitefintiy 4.0 we are going to change the implementation of content view control. The class names will be diffrerent, however the approach will be applicable in the next realease too.
