    Hi
I wondering if using SF is a bad idea for this site...... however......

I need to build a product driven site
each product will be assigned to categories and sub caegories

    e.g.

    Category (Shoes)
    --Sub Category (color black)
    ----Product 1
    ----Product 2

    Category (Sandals)
    --Sub Category (color white)
    ----Product A
    ----Product B

    etc

Each product will have a few images and some text associated to it,
Product 1 may only come in a 1 size (size 9), so i need to store this info against the product.
The user will want to be able to navigate the site via the products and categories
If the user navigates the sub category, they need to be able to show all the products in this category,
The user will also need to be able to filter all the footwear in the current category by size (i.e. size 9)

One route would be to translate these products and categories into pages.
However, this doesn't really seem like the right way to do this, is there any other way to do this (xml or DB) ? functionality out of the box??

I'm looking for suggestions on how to do this, and i'm wondering if SF is even the best solution for this??

    Thanks

    Hello Quade,

Assuming that by categories and sub-categories you mean structure like pages -> sub-pages, this implementation would cost you a bit of custom development and a lot of logic creation. This is because we do not have sub-categories structure out of the box, which means that sorting the items would involve also custom work.

If you provide us with more details about the logic and the way the exact functionality would be, we would be able to investigate for the best approach for adding it.

Hi, we have the same need.  We have large portal type site where all content falls under a Topic>>Category>>Subcategory.  We love your product BUT a single category just won't work.
We'll be at the show in San Francisco this week (June 19th)  do you think someone could chat with our developer and explain the level of effort required to make the necessary changes?  Our existing system uses SQL sever and basic .asp code.
    Thanks,
    Barbara

    Hello Barbara,

Currently, we do not have a sub-category structure in the CMS. Nevertheless, this feature attracted our attention some time ago and we will include it for one of our future releases. We sent two representatives from our team in San Francisco so you can always stop by and ask them whatever you are interested in. They will be more than happy to answer all your questions.

Thank you so much for responding. We did meet with Ivan today and he was able to answer several questions. While I’m not sure your product is “mature” enough for us right now given we need to move “fast” getting our site redone using a CMS I have to tell you I’m in love with your product. The quality of your product, ease of use, your website is so superior to your competition charging 10 times the price of your product. You are doing a phenomenal job. I think I’ve watched every video and I’ve spent a few hours on your site on the demo, reading forums, etc. Keep up the great work, the “big boys” could learn a lot from your company.   I will recommend your site to anyone who expresses interest in this type of product.

    Hi Nikifor

    Thanks for your response
The functionality i require is as follows

    1) Ability to add/modify/remove products
    2) Ability for search and filter products
    3) Ability associate images/thumbnails to products

NB: Much like you'd find in an ecommerce product only without the shopping basket

it would be good to have this as seo freindly as possible,
i.e. be able to have a page per product that i can assign keywords, meta tags, page name etc

If you could let me know how i could implement this technically i would be very happy!
If its a massive complication driving the products from pages (sitemap) then i'll skip this bit.

    thanks

    Hi Quade,

Actually, creating an e-commerce is quite a difficult task and we could not provide you with enough instructions to simplify your efforts. We have already planned creating an e-commerce module in our CMS and it will became part of it in one of the forthcoming releases. We are going to consider your suggestions when we start working on it.

Still, you could take a look at the e-commerce project created by some of the members of the Sitefinity community called Commercefinity

    All the best,

    Thanks Nikifor

    thats great
Do you have a ball park for when something like this might be integrated
i.e. will it make version 4?, will it be avaialbe in 6 months? or more like 2 years?

I know you cant say when it will be done, but could you comment on when it wont be done..... i.e. it wont be done within the next year

this will help me plan whether i wait for it or go with something else
    thanks

    Hello Quade,

There will be a Products module which will be available in the next major release, 4.0, planned for the beginning of  next year. As to the e-commerce module, it will definitely not be available for that release.

    Hope this helps a bit.

    Best wishes,
    Sonya
