    Hi,

I was refering to Search Overview article from developers manual http://www.sitefinity.com/help/developer-manual/search-overview-and-building-parts.html

Here screenshot shows one field named Search Patterns while creating search index. What is the significance of this field and why can't I see this field when I try to create new search index in my sitefinity website?

I am using trial version of standard edition of Sitefinity 3.5 and 3.6.

    Thanks in advance,
    Priti.

    Hello Priti,

We are currently updating the documentation. Thanks for pointing this out.

Generally, you select index sources, by clicking the link buttons on the Add index source pane. There are helpful tooltips (the fields marked with ?) that will explain the not-so-obvious things about indices. If, however, you need further assistance, please ask.

The search system is going to be updated for 4.0 and will include really nice features, such as searching in Word, Excel and PDF documents, so expect a lot of improvements apart from the documentation!

    Greetings,

    Hi Dido,

    Thanks for the reply.

I am specifically talking about the field "Search Patterns" here. And since I am not able to see this field in my Sitefinity website admin I cannot see the help atached to it as well.

#1. I would like to know whether this field is avaialble in version 3.5 or 3.6?

#2. I also, want to know whether Sitefinity search service supports search on media files like audio/video and images present on the website?

    Thanks,
    Priti.

    Hi Priti,

There is no such field, and in the current public implementation, searching the content of the libraries module (Images & Documents) is not possible. I informed you that we are working on this issue, and as a matter of fact, the feature is almost implemented and only final touches remain. We will see if it is possible to include it in the service pack (at most a month after the ASP.NET AJAX controls Q1 release), or if it will be released directly for 4.0 (we are currently in internal discussion about the roadmap and final release date, so I can't tell you for sure when it will be out).

As an alternative to that field, you choose an indexer, or an index source, as it is called in the UI. Every indexer has specific settings:
    • Page Index - this will make the search engine search the pages you create for keywords. You can choose which pages to be indexed (made ready for searching), or you can index all of them (by selecting none and just adding the page indexer)
    • News Index - this will prepare the news items for being searched. You can select where you have put the public control which will display the news (News View). That is the place where you will go after clicking on the search result item in the Search Results control.
    • Blogs Index - this will search through the blog posts.

I hope this will clarify the things about indexing. If I wasn't clear enough, please, feel free to ask.
    Best wishes,
    Dido
