I have two problems that may be just one. We have certain file extensions (.MRC) that are not visible in Document Manager. (version 3.7 SP3 community). These files are visible in the Hyperlink Manager and can be linked BUT cannot be downloaded when navigated to. To add another layer, left clicking from the published page (as well as backend) will take the user to a 404 error page. Right click will tell the user the file is not available (not there). This is in Internet Explorer 8. In Google Chrome, the link can be downloaded via the Right Click, but brings up the 404 error if Left Clicked.

We are hosted on GoDaddy, so it is shared hosting. Access to IIS management is not possible. I looked through many forums and found only one thread that addresses this but with no solution (aside from the IIS). I have applied this fix sans the IIS mod with no joy.

    Any solution out there?

    Thanks!
    Shawn

    Hi Shawn,

If you add the .MRC extension in libraryInfo/ Document

    <libraryInfo>
<add name="Image" title="Image Library" defaultExtenstions=".png, .jpg, .jpeg, .gif" metaKeys="Author, AlternateText, Extension, Name, Height, Width, Size, Category"></add>
<add name="Document" title="Document Library" defaultExtenstions=".doc, .docx, .rtf, .txt, .pdf, .ppt, .pps, .pptx, .html, .xls, .xlsx, .MRC" metaKeys="Author, Description, Extension, Name, Size, Category"></add>

you should be able to upload this file to a library of document type and see it using Documents Manager.

To process the client request to download this file you should have handler mapping for .MRC, otherwise the IIS will not be able to process your request.

    Hi Ivan,

I omitted that I had made your suggested change to the web.config file prior to your response. I just verified that I did make the change and still no joy.

Our old site used Linux, so not sure if the IIS has to be tweaked on their (GoDaddy's) end? Any other work-around that you can think of?

    Thanks!

    Hello Shawn,

After making the above changes I am able to upload a dummy .MRC item to the Documents library and it is shown in the Document Editor.
As for the 404 error this looks like missing handler mappings as indicated in the previous post.

    Hi Ivan,

Sorry for delay in responding. I think we're talking about two separate areas. I am able to get .mrc files uploaded in the "Images and Documents" section after the changes made, but those files are inaccessible using RadEditor, which is also limiting me to the Files directory in Document Manager.
When adding a link via RadEditor either by using the HyperLink Manager or via the Document Manager, .mrc files will either not show (Document Manager) or give out bad links (HyperLink Manager). Even using direct URL's will not work using HyperLink. The only files Document Manager will except are the usual suspects (doc, pdf, txt, etcetera).

And the head scratcher is the right click Save As will work in every browser but IE and left clicking does not work with any browser when approached from the client side and back end. (from Images and Documents via administration, file will download via right or left click)

Seems to be the configuration of RadEditor???

    Ideas?

    Thanks!
    Shawn

    Hello Shawn,

Using Document Manager I was able to add a reference to a .mrc file only with the changes I made.

    Hi Ivan,

But that's the thing... it's not working on our site. I've made the necessary changes to the handlers but it is not doing what it should... or what it supposedly should. Is there another config file that RadEditor could be looking at? Could there be a config issue with RadEditor that it is not looking at the web.config file?

I can send you a screen shot if you would like.

    Thanks!
    Shawn

    Hello Shawn,

I am sending you short video with the steps I followed. The link gets properly inserted.Note that you should have handler mapping in IIS for this extension if you want the file to get processed by the server.

    Hi Ivan,

    AHHH... here is the rub.

    1. I noticed immediately that you were using the basic RadEditor. I am/was using the expanded RadEditor. Once I changed back to the basic, I was able to link the .mrc files through the libraries.

    BUT

    2. Even with the basic editor, if I were to link to a .mrc file (or any other file not originally allowed) in the Files directory (root) I would get the same problem connecting to those files. Using the expanded editor does not allow me to get into the Libraries directory at all, only the Files directory (or a page from the site).

So, it seems as though it's when the RadEditor is in it's expanded mode that there is problem. If you have an insight on that I would appreciate it. I'll hold off on moving all of the necessary files to the Libraries until I hear from you.

Thanks for taking the time to root this out. I love a good mystery...

    Thanks!
    Shawn

    Hi Shawn,

What do you mean by "I am/was using the expanded RadEditor." The RadEditor has default dialogs which we override to make them working with images and documents module so you can pick files from them. The default RadEditor dialogs support browsing only from the file system.
Which of the above mentioned modes you use?

    Hi Ivan,

"The RadEditor has default dialogs which we override to make them working with images and documents module so you can pick files from them." ..... Yes.... I "turned on" the module for the expanded toolbars for RadEditor. Instead of the singular bar I have multiple bars activated for use.

The default RadEditor will allow me to attach the .mrc file if it resides within the Libraries directory and allow the client to left or right click to download. If it resides outside of that Libraries directory (eg: if I attach to a file from the Files directory in the root of the site) it will not allow the client to download, either left or right click, in Internet Explorer, and only allow right click saves in Chrome and Firefox.

    Hope that all makes sense...

    Thanks!

    Shawn

    Hello Shawn,

You can configure DocumentsManager of the RadEditor as shown below

    <DocumentManager UploadPaths="~/Files" ViewPaths="~/Files"  DeletePaths="~/Files" SearchPatterns="*.mrc" />

You can gather more information at RadEditor's online help.

    Hi Ivan,

Sorry for the delay, and for my ignorance... but which file do I make the change to? Do I place this in the web.config?

    Thanks...

    Hi Shawn,

This does not have anything to do with the web.config.You need to alter the RadEditor declaration as shown in the article from the previous post.
