    Hello.

We have been evaluating Sitefinity for a few of our clients. One of these clients had a few questions today that I wasn't able to answer.

    1) Can they add banner ads to the home page.

This one seemed pretty straightforward - lots of ways to accomplish this. It sounds like several people have built custom modules to accomplish ad rotation / ad management. They could implement ad management service like OpenX. Or they could just upload an image and put a link on it.

So I fired  up a test site that we've been working on, uploaded an image using the generic content control and tried to create a link for that image. I wasn't able to get the WYSIWYG editor to create a link with an image without going in the html.

Has anyone else had problems with this?

    2) How would we handle a page for executive bios?

How does everyone handle functionality like this in Sitefinity? Obviously, you could have the client create a page for every person and just create a link to that page. That seems pretty inefficient to me. Do you mostly create a custom module for this type of thing? The client we're working with doesn't have a huge budget to work with, so I'm trying to determine the best way to build this functionality - keeping in mind their budget.

    3) Can we create content that we will be able to contract and expand with a mouse click?

My thought here was to build an extension of the generic content control that would have javascript allowing it to expand and contract. There isn't an existing control to do that, is there? I looked at the RAD tab strip, but that doesn't sound like it would do what they need it to.

Sorry for all the newbie questions - I have done some research and we have a sandbox installed with the asp 2.0 version of Sitefinity. I really was hoping to tap into the experiences that people here have had to see if we're missing some obvious solutions.

    Thanks for your time.

    Hi Jason,

    1) Can they add banner ads to the home page.

Yes, they can. You can use GenericCotent control and insert an image. You can set a link to this image using RadEditor's Image Map Editor. Second option is using an Image control in the body of your master page. Another option is using RadRotator control that can be bound to XmlDataSource or to Images and Document module.

    2) How would we handle a page for executive bios?

The easiest way is using FaceBook's press room approach (http://www.facebook.com/press/info.php?execbios). This could be achieved with any Sitefinity's GenericContent based controls since most of the items are represented by a repeater. You have option to add custom metakeys that will be automatically persisted for your items and you do not have to create custom tables in your database.

Of course a better option is creating a custom module and control for it. The control will represent all data for your users. You can add an image and a link near each image that could point to user's page where is the full content of his/her bio. The easiest approach here is creating only a user control and getting data form ProfileBase and MembershipInfo directly from User Details. There you can add some custom description as a profile key ( this will not allow you to have long text. It is useful for several sentences.

    3) Can we create content that we will be able to contract and expand with a mouse click

Yes this is possible. You can use js or jQuery. You can observe required behavior setting EventsView control to use ExpandableList Presentation mode.
