    Hello,

I've read the forum thread about having multiple sites stored in the same database by providing an applicationName attribute in the web.config file.

My question is whether or not there is a way to configure the search service to retrieve results from both sites, regardless of which site the user is currently on.  For example, I have two websites under the same domain, defined in web.config as "/website1" and "/website2".  If a user searches for "foobar" on Website 1, I would like the results to include hits from both Website1 and Website2.

If I define applicationName for the search provider as "/", will that allow me to retrieve results for any applicationName, or will it only retrieve results for websites where applicationName is not explicitly defined?

Alternatively, is there a straightforward way of extending the Search module/service into a GlobalSearch that would iterate through all of the applicationNames stored in a database and A) integrate the results, or B) display the results grouped by applicationName?

    Thanks for you help,
    Dan

    Hi Dan Cozine,

The search data is not stored in website database. It is stored by Lucene in its segments files in App_Data folder and this is why making any manipulations with the applicationName will not give you desired results. The only way to get results from both websites is creating a common index that includes results from these websites.  The problem is that

    • the search index can be created only for the current website - you cannot add content from another website directly in the index.
    • each time you update a page or content item the index updates automatically. This means that you have to merge/update App_Data/Search/YourIndexName folder regularly using file replication tool.
