I just wanted to update this thread for anyone currently looking for more information regarding upgrading/migrating their site to Sitefinity 5.0. I was recently able to run through the process of updating another site which was running on Sitefinity 3.7 SP3 (however the process should be similar to 3.6).
A piece of vital information, which appears the throw people off what to do, is the key difference between "upgrade" and "migrate" (explained
further down in Upgrade 3.7 - 5.0
). Upgrading being the method of raising the site to a newer version and migrating being the method of moving content and data to a new site (what gets included in migration can be found in the migration-guide
However, Sitefinity 4.0 plus introduced a new build and architecture, meaning upgrades are slightly limited. For example, you can upgrade a Sitefinity 3.6 site to 3.7 but not 3.X to 4.X plus. Therefore, you would have to migrate from one site to another (which can be done with 2 local development sites).
The minimal requirement for migrating a 3.X site to Sitefinity 4.0 plus, is that your current site must be running on Sitefinity 3.7 SP4 on IIS (check your version here
), this can been achieved by downloading a patch or "hotfix" from your Sitefinity account downloads section (see here
for more about upgrading to 3.7 SP4), however, ensure you are using the correct version and edition (i.e. Standard Edition).
Once you have upgraded you site to 3.7 SP4 (you can tell by checking the version number) you can then prepare the site for migration (you can do this manually
). Automatically can be done by going to your Sitefinity Project Manager and selecting "Set SF 3.7 for migration" from the "actions" tab and filling out the requested information.
Once complete, you will need a new site to migrate to, this can be from Sitefinity 4.0 up. It is advised that the file structure is kept the same as your current site to minimise errors during migration. From here, you can select the "Migrate your site from Sitefinity 3.7 SP4 to the newset version" link found on the dashboard of your new site.
Hopefully this will at least shed some light on the subject of upgrading/migrating your site.
