I was receiving this error after moving my sitefinity installation outside of a subdirectory into the root directory.
I have an ASP.NET application in another directory under the root, which was inheriting the web.config file in the root. This subapplication is a precompiled application with Personalization turned off. Sitefinity has personalization turned on. I was getting an error message: This application was precompiled with personalization turned off, but it appears to have been turned on after the precompilation, which is not supported.

After doing a search, i found out how to stop the inheritance (by using <location> tag, with inheritInChildApplications="false".) This all seemed to work, and I could access the sitefinity subdirectory to administer the website.

I opened sitefinity administration section, then clicked on Modules, which brought up this error message.

Doing some reading around these forums, suggestions included using <clear />, and duplicating parts of root web.config into Sitefinity/ web.config.

I couldn't get any of those to work, and instead moved sitefinity back to a subdirectory. I will redirect users to the subdirectory upon accessing the root URL.

Is it possible to provide a web.config for Sitefinity directory so I can apply the <location inheritInChildApplications="false"> tag on my root web.config directory? Or tell me what I need in sitefinity web.config to make it work?

All templates, themes, external files reference the root directory and if I keep sitefinity in a subdirectory, it will be a nightmare to change all references.

    Any thoughts or suggestions appreciated,

    Thank you.

I've just copied the <pages> configuration element into the sitefinity folder's web.config.
Everything seems to work so far and haven't had any issues.
