I created the sample (Telerik University) from a browser on a machine, not the server.  It threw an exception, but because of security did not tell me what it was.

The new site did exist, when displayed on the server.  Opening to browse, or to edit, the site, threw the exception:

A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. The server was not found or was not accessible. Verify that the instance name is correct and that SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections.

The funny thing is that there are other (practice) sites - this is a new installation - on the server, and they can be brought up, so this is specific to SiteFinity creating the sample site.  How do I change the database connections to the sample site, and more importantly, how do I change the database defaults that SiteFinity uses for the creation of the sample site?

    Hello Joseph,

Currently, Sitefinity uses Nolics.NET for database CRUD, using forward egineering, to create its databases. We only implement a provider using Nolics.NET and do nothing related to databases ourselves. In the upcoming 4.0 release we are planning on using Open Access, and this will probably eliminate some of the problems end-users are having.

We need to reproduce the issue you experience in order to help you, so, please, would you give us some more information:
    • a complete stack trace
    • you need to verify that remote connections are indeed turned on (Start Menu->All Programs->SQL Server 2005->Configuration Tools->SQL Server Surface Area Configuration, then Service Area Configuration for Services and Connections->Database Connections->Remote Connections; tjhen in the same dialog go to SQL Server browser->Service and ensure it is running) I give you the instructions for 2005 as you haven't specified any version.
    • a complete information about your working environment: OS, SQL Server, bit-ness (32 or 64), .NET version, SF version, web.config, the created db.
    • short description on how to reproduce the problem

Thank you for contacting us. We are planning on improving the user experience for 4.0 during installation and upgrade, so any feedback is appreciated.

    Kind regards,
    Dido

I need instructions on how to create the stack trace.

Remote connections are turned on, as other sites are working.  It was the creation of the sample site that failed.  Still, I will verify your specific procedure and reply.

In this environment, SiteFinity and SQL Server 2008 reside on separate machines.  They are both VM machines running under VMWare.  The OS is Windows 2003 server, with all updates applied.  They are running 32 bit.  SiteFinity is 3.5.  .NET is 3.5.  I will find and send the config.

To produce the problem, simply create the sample site.  To try again, I deleted the defective site, but now the button to create it does not appear.  IT seems like a one-time-only option.

Delete physical folder from your drive ( by default it is C:\Program Files\telerik\Sitefinity3.5\WebSites\TIUSite_v3.5. Then restart IIS and load your project manager. The link should appear again.

A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. The server was not found or was not accessible. Verify that the instance name is correct and that SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections.

Check whether the name of the server and DB you have created are correct. Check also whether the user you are trying to use for logging to SQL Server exists under your database >> security.

    Hi tanmay,

Check whether your remote server is configured to allow remote connections as the error message says. The problem is related to the SQL server connection - the user you use could be incorrect or does not have permissions to access the server or your database. Check whether the name of the server is correct and you do not have some firewall that blocks the connection. Our provider cannot set the connection at Telerik.DataAccess.NolicsHelper.SetConnection and the error is thrown.

    Sincerely yours,
    Ivan Dimitrov
