I've installed the trial version of Sitefinity 3.1 on Windows XP SP2, Sql Express.

When I try and run or edit either of the demo sites I get the following error:

"Generating user instances in SQL Server is disabled. Use sp_configure 'user instances enabled' to generate user instances. "

I also get the same error when I try to create a new project at the point where I select 'SQLExpress" database and click continue.

I've checked SQLExpress and there aren't any Sitefinity databases, I don't know if there should be any created during the installation...? I've not found any useful information in the User Manual, it seems to jump around a lot and I'm not clear if I need to edit anything, import an MDF or should just expect it to work.

The other CMS I'm evaluating installed perfectly against the same instance of SQLExpress.

    Can anyone suggest anything?

    thanks,
    Paul

Just and update for those that are interested. I finally got it (partially) working by running the followed command:

exec sp_configure 'user instances enabled', 1.
    reconfigure

So now I can create sites and run the University demo, I still get the same error with the Job site demo though.

    Hi Paul,

Please try running the same query for the Jobs site database. Also, I would suggest you download Management Studio Express if you haven't installed it yet, which is more powerful for executing T-SQL commands as well as managing SQL databases.

    Hello,

There isn't a "jobs" database created, I manually created an empty database called "Sitefinity" and ran the stored proc against that. This got the University demo working but not the jobsite.

I've got the management tools already installed thanks.

    Thanks,
    Paul

    Hello Paul,

You could find the database of Jobs IntraSite in the App_Data folder (Sitefinity.mdf). Once you have installed Sitefinity on your machine, the sample sites including their database should be configured automatically.

    Hope this helps.

    Kind regards,

    Hello,

So are you confirming that the installation has failed?

    Thanks,

    Hi Paul,

Most probably your Sitefinity installation was not successful. So, we would suggest you use the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility that is offered by Microsoft to uninstall Sitefinity. Make sure no files and folders remain in the installation folder.

Before you proceed with the new installation, please read our
System Requirements in the Installation Guide. You could download it from the  Sitefinity documentation page.

Do let us know how it goes.

    All the best,
