We have just purchased Sitefinity for several domains and are trying to finalize our server setup.  We have 2 web servers (development and production) and 2 SQL Servers (both running SQL Server 2005).  We would like to have the SQL Servers mirror each other, but my question is, do we need to have one database server for development and another for production?  What is the best practice for this?  If we do have separate development database and production databases, what is the best way to deploy the database when ready to go live?

    Hi Christopher,

The best solution is to use one database for both servers. In this case, you could set CacheDependancy mode to InDatabase, so when you make changes to one of the sites, they will be immediately transferred to the other (as in WebFarm environment).

Otherwise, you should consider the database synchronization between the two servers, for example you should follow this working cycle:
        - make database changes locally
        - update staging site database from the local one
        - make database changes on the staging server
        - update local database from the staging one
        - make database changes locally and so on...

As for migrating the database to production, you can find detailed instructions in the Sitefinity User Manual, section Migrating projects to the production web server.
Hope this answers your question. Please let us know if you need any further assistance.

    Sincerely yours,

    Rebecca,

I realize your reply was over a year ago, but I'm not able to find a section titled Migrating projects to the production web server in the User Manual or the Installation Manual. Any thoughts on where I can find it?

    Thanks,

    Rob

    Hello Rob Walling,

The section was temporarily exclude form the last manual due to performing an update. I suggest that you should download an old version of Sitefinity's User Manual ( say 3.5). The Migration process is common for all versions and ASP.NET Websites.

Let us know if you need further assistance.

    All the best,

Thank you for posting this information, I spent the better part of today looking for the information in the broken link "migrate the SQL database" on page 209 of the 3.7 user manual.

I am working on migrating a development site to a cloud webhosting environment (rackspace), and have to migrate everything to a database with a new rackspace.com prefix.
