I referenced this link and it the directions were very weak and still not clear:
    http://www.sitefinity.com/devnet/upgrade-instructions.aspx

    BACKGROUND:
    1>Employee which managed sitefinity left.
2>We are trying to upgrade sitefinity to run on our new production server which runs only  .net 4.0 apps
3>I was hoping to copy the website which was running under the previous version of sitefinity and migrate it using file explorer and edit a couple changes in the web.config file (to use the same database).
    4>The website is very vanilla.

    NOTICE:
1>Sitefinitiy 3.7 is not installed on the production web server
2>I followed the directions of the install and found out "Sitefinity" has some installed folder where it places the websites.  We work with another folder for our production sites.
3>I followed the directions, compiled the site in VS 2010 / .net 4.0 and everything seem to compile correctly.
4>When I went to fire up the website; site finitiy asked me to pick a database......WHAT THE HELL?
I thought the new website would appeared.
SO I HAVE BEEN WRESTLING ALL DAY TRYING TO GET RID OF THIS.....

    LEFT 2 other blog posts.

SO NOW I TRiED TO INSTALL SITEFINITy on my localhost AND FIGURED OUT IT HAS SOME "project manager"... WHICH MANAGES THE SITEFINITY WEBSITES....  do not really know what this is used for.
BUT THE INSTALL DIRECTIONS REFERENCE SOMETHING ABOUT THIS.

I THOUGHT SITE FINITIY WAS A SELF-CONTAINED WEBSITE...with out any extremities in any other folder.
YES I DO REALIZE IT HAS A DATABASE...but that was a given.

QUESTION: HOW CAN I UPGRADE A WEBSITE WITH OUT INSTALLING SITEFINITY ON THE PRODUCTION WEBSERVER????

QUESTION: HOW CAN I MANAGE A PROJECT WHICH IS LOCATED ON THE PRODUCTION WEB SERVER SO THAT I CAN UPGRADE THE VERSION OF IT?????

QUESTION: WHY ISN'T THE SERVICE PACKS WITH My "PURCHASED PRODUCTS"....in place of finding the service packs under "FREE/DEMO PRODUCTS"????

    ANY HELP WOULD BE APPRECIATED...

OK...SO AFter working through all the things I tried (this is what worked).

REALLY THE DOCUMENTATION FOR UPGRADING SITEFINITY REALLY NEEDS TO IMPROVE AND MAYBE SHOW A COUPLE PRINT SCREENS.  and to note...this is a "WORK AROUND" and probably not the way I shold do it.

To note: If you are working on a productions server (2008 R2) you can not run javascript  (hence you can not select the database).

SO SINCE I COULD NOT RUN THE BROWSER AS ADMINISTRATOR TO UPGRADE THE SITEFINITY...I DECIDED TO DO THE NEXT BEST THING...

ASSINGN THE "EVERYONE" GROUP TO THE "SITEFINITY WEBSITE FOLDER"...and give the group "FULL CONTROLE" This way I would be able upgrade the website on the server.

ONCE I DID THIS....I WAS ABLE TO SELECT THE DATABASE and "SITEFINITY" upgraded the web.config file like it wanted.  WHY DOES IT DO THIS??? NO CLUE..

BUT ANYWAYS...it did everything it needed to do and I TESTED AND LOGGED IN AND THE PROBLEM WAS FIXED....THE WEBSITE UPGRADE TO THE LATEST PATCH.

    content="Sitefinity 3.7.2136.240:0"

AFTER I ENSURED EVERYTHING WAS GOOD.....I TOOK THE EVERYONE GROUP AWAY FROM THE SECURITY GROUP.

FOR GOOD MEASURE....I RESTARTED ALL IIS SERVICES AFTER EACH OF THE ABOVE STEPS

    THANKS ANYWAYS:

    Hi Sravanthi,

    1. Upgrades should be performed on a local server where you have full access.
    2. You should have dbo rights over the database server
    3. To patch the project you should use 3.x hotfixes/patches not the installer.
    4. Upgrading the project requires to merge all template changes if there are any. We mention in the release notes of the SP if we made changes to the embedded templates.
    5. Sitefinity is ASP.NET website and it require skills related to IIS, Widnows, SQL technologies when you want to perform an upgrade.

    Best wishes,
