I have a question related to test instances. I actually post under another post but didn't any response so posting as seperate thread.

We will be purchasing the standard edition. We currently use trial edition in both of our dev and test servers. We plan to buy the product for two domains. Each domain will have seperate and test and dev instance in seperate servers. How is licensing works?  ONce we download the license key, where do we need to update or just add the file somewhere to avoid getting the trial message in dev and test servers?

    Please clarify.

First I want to clarify that it is no longer possible to purchase a license for Sitefinity 3.7 or an older version. Therefore, we recommend that you build your projects with Sitefinity 4.0.

We license Sitefinity per root domain name and there is no limitation on the number of software instances nor on the number of sub-domains and servers. Therefore, if you purchase a license for mydomain.com, you can have this root domain point to your production server with the Sitefinity website. In case you want to have a dev or test environment, you can set up different servers and Sitefinity instances with the same license key that is used for mydomain.com. The different environments should be accessible though sub domains of mydomain.com such as test.mydomain.com and dev.mydomain.com.

Furthermore, you can even build your company intranet with Sitefinity utilizing the license for your root domain name. The intranet can be accessible only within your network again though a sub-domain such as intranet.mydomain.com, given that you have purchased a Sitefinity license for mydomain.com.

    Anton,

    Thanks for the reply.

THe reason we wanted to go 3.7 is because it is a stable and 4.0 just released and we don't want to take a chance. I know we can only get license for 4.0 but we should be able to use the 3.7 build to release. Is it compulsory to use 4.0 license to 4.0 only. I thought 3.7 is still supported. Please clarify.

In regard to license key, I know subdomain can use same license key. My question was how licensing works. It works differently by different third party apps. Some use seperate license key file and add in the root. Some use web/machine config and so do other way. What is the method to add the license key in dev and test servers?

    Hi VIJAIANAND,

The process of applying a Sitefinity license key to a dev or a testing environment is the same as with the process of applying the license key on a production environment. After you purchase a Sitefinity license, you should download your license key as a separate file and upload it within your Sitefinity project.

About your first question, please contact our sales department at sales@sitefinity.com to see what we can do in your situation.

    Hello Vijaianand,

The reason why Anton recommended contacting our sales team was that our sales managers would be able to discuss with you your project and requirements and then recommend the best solution for you.

Thank you for getting back to me!

As I understood you are in contact with one of our sales managers already, so you probably have discussed the question and reached a solution already.
