    Hi

Has anyone attempted to run Sitefinity on a Linux box using Mono?

We've got a large Linux environment, but I can't find a sensibly priced CMS that provides the same level of functionality and management tools.  We already run some local websites using Sitefinity, but this is for our global presence.

I've looked at the Leyna's and OpenCMS', but they feel clunky and technical for the level of users we have. We don't support PHP, so Joomla etc are out the window.

    Any thoughts?

    Thanks
    Ben

    Hi Ben Johnson,

We haven't tested Sitefinity with Mono for Linux so far, but we believe that there will be some problems. The officially supported platforms at the moment are Windows OS based servers.

    Kind regards,

Has this possibility been revisited by Telerik as of yet?

I too would like to explore the possibility of providing Sitefinity solutions within a mono environment.  I understand that Telerik ASP.NET AJAX controls now fully support Mono, so it is clear that Telerik is aware of the potential benefits of exploring such an option.

If nothing else, is there a good "unofficial" resource for testing this deployment possibility and/or some of the issues Telerik feels may crop up?

    Hi Pete,

Unfortunately we do not test Sitefinity on Mono yet, and do not know if anyone else has tried.

    All the best,

I too am interested in this as well.  I'd very much like to run on OBSD/etc eventually and follow the Mono project closely.  If I test, I'll report what I find.  Not sure if the Nolics library would be a portable .Net library but I could see that as a potential area that might need some mod/tuning to run on Mono...

I've not had a chance to try this out yet, but will also post results here.

There's clearly interest, so pooling resources will hopefully get us there quicker!

sounds good to me.  you can reach me at chris AT innovativecodeNOSP4Mcom and we can organize some testing.  i'm strong on windoze, not on bsd but have a cpl VMWare VMs running obsd and freebsd and have walked through some mono tutorials on how to get asp.net running, etc.  willing to share anything/everthing i learn about putting SF on top of this ennvironment.  thanks!!

in case this is helpful to anyone...  the reason i'd like to target mono is simply b/c i feel security and performance (not to mention upfront $) would improve if i deployed on say either obsd or freebsd.  if i get this running, i can configure vm vs vm testing comparisons to see if win2008 is competitive with either of those bsds and think others might find those kind of numbers interesting too.

anyway, it's a background thread for me right now as i have many other more pressing issues to worry about now.  but it's getting some attention when i have the time and again i'll share anything i learn and would love to hear from others trying the same.

    thanks!

    Chris

Same on the work load front, but will definitely commit some time shortly (or get someone else to!).

My drivers for this are that our main public sites are Linux/Java-based and the main support team (which unfortunately I don't control) won't go through the process of learning how to make IIS secure enough for our production environment (I know all the arguments, more patches for tomcat, etc etc), but I can't find a comparable product at anywhere near the price point. We're running 3-4 other sites outside of the main prod environment using Sitefinity, so this could be a big win and a compromise.....

    Hello Ben Johnson,

While we haven't tried to do this, MoMA reports that there is still some functionality that is not implemented in Mono. To see the actual report, download Sitefinity 3.6sp1 for .net 2.0 and run the tool against your bin directory.

    All the best,
