    I have set the SMTP on the same server as SiteFinity running.

    In the Web.Config file as you have described:
    http://www.sitefinity.com/sf3/faq.html#newsletters

    I have changed the smtp server settings

    <system.net>
    <mailSettings>
    <smtp from="info@netmedia.as">
    <network host="localhos" defaultCredentials="true" port="25" />
    </smtp>
    </mailSettings>
    </system.net>

    When I goto the "Modules -> Newsletters", then it says:

    "No active Smtp Setting detected, you need an active setting to be able to send newsletters, go to smtp setting and set one"

    Hi mInNaL,

    You should set SMTP Server settings in Newsletters module in the administration section in Sitefinity 3.6 and Sitefinity 3.7.

    Please, do the following steps:
    1. Log in to the Administration and go to section Modules>Newslettes.
    2. Click on the SMTP Server Settings link in the left side pane.
    3. In the page which opens, enter the settings of your SMTP Server.
    4. Click on button Test and save current setting. Using the SMTP server settings and email provided in step 3, a verification email will be sent.
    5. Click on the Activate button. The settings will be applied to the Newsletter Module.

    Hi v,

    Web.cofig configuration does not affect Newsletters module. The module stores its SMTP settings in Sitefinity's database using DataManager provider, which requires to set your account through the backend. It is not possible to activate your account if you do not supply your username and password. Also, username and password strings are used in MailingService class and SendMail method as parameters.

    Hi all

    I'm trying to set up the SMTP in the newsletters module and running into problems because I need to set up SSL and the from address as my ISP is rejecting it. I see I can set this in the web.config but that Newsletters is using it's own config so is there any way I can set the from address etc?

    Many thanks

    Matt

    Hello mattc,

    Newletters module reads its settings from the database - [sf_Notif_SMTPSetting]. The table contains

    •     [Application]
    •     [SmtpSettingId]
    •     [SettingName]
    •     [Host]
    •     [Username]
    •     [Password]
    •     [TestDate]
    •     [status]
    •     [SSL]
    •     [Active]
    •     [Port]
    The form/to are used only when you send a newsletter. You should enable SSL for the entire module from Smtp Settings form.

    Hi Ivan

    Thanks for your reply. good to know where this is stored, I can see those records for each setting profile I am creating.
    I still haven't got it to work with me.com or Gmail though.

    Me.com I get a message from SF saying:
    "The specified string is not in the form required for an e-mail address."

    This is because for me.com the username is just that, the username not the email address. I s there any way to get round that?

    Gmail just keeps timing out, although I can telnet to the hostname smtp.gmail.com on port 465 which it uses for SSL connections...

    This is all not critical as on a live site we would use a local SMTP relay to avoid the website having to wait to connect to a foreign SMTP host, but would be good to be able to set these to a private email relay in development.

    Matt

    Hi mattc,

    Open [sf_Notif_SMTPSetting] for [status] column set True and for [Active] set True and this will activate your settings and allow you to use me.com account instead of using an email format.

    Hi Ivan

    Many thanks for that :)

    As an alternative for development, I have just installed smtp4dev, http://smtp4dev.codeplex.com/
    Acts as a mail replay but doesn't actually send the mails but allows you to view the content, headers etc etc, nice little tool.
