    Hello,

I'm a complete noob to Sitefinity, but a long-time asp.net developer.  I'm impressed with what I see so far.

I want to install Sitefinity on a shared hosting account, but instructions seems a bit thin on the ground.

What I need to know is, do I need to install Sitefinity on a local machine first, then use Visual Studio to publish the site to my shared hosting account?  Or is it possible to just xcopy deploy the files to my shared hosting account?

I just want to get started with Sitefinity and try out the features before I start trying to code against it.  I checked the user guide and installation guide, but they seem focussed on local installation.

    Any pointers would be appreciated!

    Cheers,
    Andrew.

    Hi Andrew,

Thank you very much for your interest in Sitefinity and getting in touch with us.
You don't need to install Sitefinity on shared hosting as you don't need to have Sitefinity installation on the computer used for the final deployment of the web site. We would recommend you install Sitefinity on your local development machine, develop your site there and then deploy it to the shared hosting server. Then you'll only need to configure the IIS properly and add all external files that you have added to the staged server such as images, CSS or user controls and any other resources you have created. After the migration to shared hosting, all CMS functionality will continue to operate as the process is a mere physical relocation of the application.

For more information about this, please refer to the following sections of the User Manual:
      - Working with Web Site Projects > Migrating Projects to the Production Web Server
      - Medium Trust Support
You can also have a look at this KB article: DiscountASP.NET hosting provider

Do let us know if you need any further information or assistance.

    Best wishes,

Ah, I see - thanks for the reply.

What I wanted to do was install it on my shared hosting provider and have a play around with it and try to build the community I have planned.  Then maybe show it to a few other people.  But as I understand it, I'll need to install it locally, then deploy it.

I'll take a look at the links you've posted.

    Many thanks,
    Andrew.
