    Hello Justin,

You can upgrde to 4.1 but you have to move first from 3.7 to 4.0 then to 4.1. This is how you can do that -

You can use the migration tool http://sitefinitymigration.codeplex.com/  to migrate the data from 3.x to 4.0.

The tool uses web services and it does not operate with the database directly.  Also make sure to backup your files first. Here are the official upgrade instructions http://www.sitefinity.com/support/upgrade-instructions.aspx

If we assume that your project has passed the steps from 3.7 - 4.0 and it is 4.0 now, follow these steps:

    - create a blank project ( having the same version as your project ) using the ProjectManager.

    - copy the entry in Project.XML that has been created ( the file can be found in the same folder which also contains ProjectManager.exe ) to the Project.XML of the newer version.

    - hit the upgrade button of the ProjectManager.

If you use IIS to setup your project locally and on your production server please visit this article.

Also you may have heard about we changed the way how the persistent classes are mapped in the database. This is the most probable reason why your custom module cannot function ( and build properly). Please make sure to visit my colleague Slavo's blog about this change so you can get a better understanding on how the system works now and try to convert your module to be compatible with Sitefinity 4.1.

    1. Hope migration tool in codeplex completely migrate with the Custom Usercontrols and the Master Pages and Retain     the association with the current pages.

    2. After watching the video
        http://tv.telerik.com/watch/sitefinity/migration-tool-for-sitefinity-40-rc
Towards the end(00:25) . Found few Issues in Page titles ( removing   &) , Layouts and URL

Hope these Issues are fixed in latest sitefinity migration tool.
Found the Video to be little out dated.

    Hello Justin,

Please note that the migration tool migrates only the data, not custom controls and logic, so you may need a developer to migrate your controls to SF 4.x

The migration tool is frequently updated so the issues from the video may not be present in your migrated project.

Please make sure to make a backup copy of your project before upgrading.

    Kind regards,

Victor, you mention that one can upgrade from 3.7 to 4.1 (by first upgrading to 4.0). Does one have to be on a specific version of 3.7 before doing this? We are on SP1. Do we need to first get to 3.7 SP4 before upgrading to 4.0? Or can we just go from 3.7 SP1 to 4.0?

    Thanks

    Hello David,

Yes, you need to get your version of Sitefinity to be 3.7 SP3+. This can be done by applying a patch which you can download from your account ( please see attached screenshot ).

The patch is needed because it contains the files which will move your 3.7 version to 3.7 sp4. You need to follow the instructions carefully in order for the upgrade process to complete flawlessly.

    You can find them here:
    http://www.sitefinity.com/devnet/upgrade-instructions.aspx
