I'm not sure if this is a Sitefinity problem or an IIS problem, but when I try to go to the root of my site I get a "Your are not authorized to view this page" error.  If I type is the site name and add default.aspx then the site loads just fine.  I created a page and called it index.aspx and the site loads fine when I go directly to that.  I checked the IIS settings and I have default content turned on and those pages are in the list (default settings for IIS).  What can I do to get the site to load properly without having to type in the specific page?  Any help is much appreciated.

Ok, so I just solved my own problem.  The error I was getting is a 401.3 error.  This has to do with ACLs on the site's root directory.  With anonymous access enabled for the site, the site was running those anonymous users under the IUSR_xxx account.  That account lacked the appropriate read permissions on the site's root folder in the file system.  I found the answer here if anybody else is having similar issues:
