How can I find out how to set-up the 3.2 blogs module and what all of the options are?  I found only 2 pages in the 3.2 users manual that were not very informative.

    Thanks in advance.

    Hi Brook,

Please, let us know what exact information you need concerning blogs. You could take a look at the TIU tutorial to see how the blogs module is implemented in practice. You could access it in your Sitefinity installation - Start menu -> Programs -> telerik -> Sitefinity 3.2 -> Documentation -> TIU Site Tutorial. If you need further information, please describe what you expect to read about the Blogs module.

Thank you for your cooperation in advance.

    Sincerely yours,

Not to be ungrateful, but I have tried the 3.2 installed User Manual, TIU Site Tutorial, Forums, Telerik hosted demo site and nothing seems to match the new UI Screens for the blog Module...

Also I understand how to create a blog and make posts to it.  Where I am in need to guidance is using the blog controls on pages and what settings to use and what they all do.

Let me explain what I am seeing to ensure tha everyhting installed correctly etc..  I have two blogs set-up with a few posts in each I want to display the first on a page in the portal.  So I edit the page I want the posts on and open up the Add Controls dialog box..

Under Blogs I currently have the following controls available:
    Blog Posts, Archive, Bloggers

(Bloggers isnt referenced in any doucmentation I have seen yet.)

I assume that I use the Blog Posts control, at this point I have no idea what propertys to set  or combinations.  In the prior version that used the Single Post control (which is referenced in the documentation) the settings were fairly straight forward.  The New Blog Posts, is a bit more confusing..  Do you have instructions on using this control?  My goals is to have multiple pages on my site that have either a single blog or have been filtered for a specific category assignment within a blog.  My challenge is that none of the documentation appears to address the New Blog Posts control.   I hope that makes sense.

    Hi Brook,

Thank you for the explanation and please excuse us for omitting to describe this functionality.

Here is some information that might be helpful to you:

    • Blog Posts is the new Blogs public control that is based on the Content View control (also new to Sitefinity). Blog Posts is the only available control that displays one or more blogs, and there is no longer a control that displays single posts.
    • Bloggers is the new Blogs public control that displays a list of active bloggers.
    • Archive displays blogs that might have already expired.

Here are some settings that need to be made in order to work with these public controls:

    • Blog Posts:
    1. Behavior section: DisplayMode should be Auto
    2. Behavior section: Visible should be True
    3. Behavior section: ParentIDs should be set to the blogs to be diplayed
    4. Data section: ProviderName should contain the name of the provider
    5. Paging section: AllowPaging to True
    • Bloggers
    1. Behavior section: Visible should be True
    2. Behavior section: ControlTitle should be set to the desired title
    3. Behavior section: NumberOfMonthsForActiveBloggers to number of months for which a blogger is allowed to be inactive and still be considered an active blogger
    4. Data section: ProviderName should contain the name of the provider
    5. Click on the Blog Settings link in the Modules -> Blogs tab, for a specific blog. In the comments region, select a specific blog page that will be displayed when a blogger is accessed in the Blogger list
    • Archive
    1. Behavior section: ParentIDs should be set to the blogs to be displayed
    2. Data section: ProviderName should contain the name of the provider

Hope this helps. Please let us know if you need further assistance with the blogs controls.

    Sincerely yours,
    Sonya

Thanks for the reply, but I am still unable to get my blog posts to display.  I see the list of blog posts displayed on the page where I have the blog control, but when I click on a post to view the details of the full blog post i get a 404 error...

    The resource cannot be found.

Description: HTTP 404. The resource you are looking for (or one of its dependencies) could have been removed, had its name changed, or is temporarily unavailable.  Please review the following URL and make sure that it is spelled correctly.

    Requested URL: /Blogs/08-03-05/Demo_Article.aspx

The address shown in my browser (tried both IE and FF) shows the url with everything except for the the actual page name the blog control is sitting on...

    shown in browser:

if I manually type in the page name, Academic.aspx, that the blog control is on into the browser address line i get the single blog post to display:

the entry comes up.  So there is something perhaps I have not set-up correctly on IIS (6.0 on Server 2003), within the blog control itself?  I have gone back through all of the deployment steps, twice including some of the extra one I found in the forums (e.g. sflb etc.. isapi registration).

I did enable workflow, not sure if that helps or not.  right now the blog module is somewhat inoperative for me...

    Hi Brook,

I have couple of suggestions that may be causing this 404 problem:

    1. Problem in the upgrade of the web.config file section which relates to url rewriting. It should be set like this (urlRewriteFormat="[Publication_Date]/[Title].aspx"):

            <cmsEngine defaultProvider="Generic_Content"
                <providers>
                    <clear/>

                    <add name="Blogs" urlRewriteFormat="[Publication_Date]/[Title].aspx" urlDateTimeFormat="yy-MM-dd" urlWhitespaceChar="_" visible="False" defaultMetaField="Title" applicationName="/Blogs" allowVersioning="True" allowLocalization="False" localizationProviderName="" allowWorkflow="False" securityProviderName="" versioningProviderName="" connectionStringName="GenericContentConnection" type="Telerik.Blogs.Data.DefaultBlogProvider, Telerik.Blogs.Data"/>

    2. You have set SingleItemUrl property of the Blog Posts control to a page where you do not have Blog Posts control set.

    Hope this helps!

    Tihomir,

The web.config changes for the urlrewrite section appears to have worked.  Thanks!
The web.config was generated when I created the project and I did not realize this had to be modified before deployment.  Nothing was referenced anywhere.  I am sure I will not be the only one with this issue.

I am still unclear on how to use some of the settings for the blog module and am hoping someone could quickly, recap by setting (all of the behavior settings) what each does and the correct format for entries..  e.g. SummarySettings, How to pre-filter by category, Period, TagPageKey, CategoryPageKey etc, change summary character/word count.. settings that were very obvious in the prior release.

For the other modules, Generic_Content, News, Libraries and Events I am assuming I need to make the same URLRewrite changes?  Most are easy, I am just not sure about the set-up on the Libraries entry..

    ~/{Provider}/{LibraryName}/[Name].sflb

do I just drop off the ~/{Provider}/ ?

    Thank you in advance!

    Hi Brook,

Let me answer your questions one by one:

The web.config was generated when I created the project and I did not realize this had to be modified before deployment.

These are troubling findings. We will need to research it and try to reproduce why this has happened in your case. In order to minimize the research efforts a bit, can you tell us what is your Sitefinity version - Standard or Community?

I am still unclear on how to use some of the settings for the blog module

This was something that we've missed in our documentation for the release and we will add a KB in the next couple of days so that you guys can feel comfortable with the new release and give more proper feedback on the changes.

.. settings that were very obvious in the prior release.

We will try to make those as much usable as possible and this is a goal we definitely have.

Yes, you will need to make this modification to all modules except for Libraries where you should leave it as-is
    ~/{Provider}/{LibraryName}/[Name].sflb

Please excuse us for the caused inconvenience.

Tihomir,  Johnny on the spot today!

    Thanks!

I am using purchased version of 3.2, not the community version.  In creating the project, I specified to use the Company Template and a SQL 2005 Database connection.

I tried to create another new project this AM using no template and the web config file has the correct url setting in the web.config, so tried specifying the Company Template and there was the incorrect urlrewrites, so the issue is in the templates....

    Hi Brook,

Thanks for providing us with this information, it was really helpful to pinpoint the problem. In fact, this problem has already been fixed and if you download Sitefinity 3.2 again from your Client.NET account, you won't see it there.

Check out the official blog post by Rebecca if you need instructions on how to upgrade posted on 07/03/2008 in the official release forum thread.

    Hope this helps!
