I currently have the need to develop 19 similar (but not identical) websites based on a common theme. It struck me that it would be nice if Sitefinity offered another product edition that was suited for this:

    • Licensing -- a per-server license would be nice with a volume pricing based on the number of sites (e.g. $2000 for up to 10 sites, $5000 for unlimited).

    • Capability -- rather than relying on the application key to differentiate content within a single database, put the functionality within the Sitefinity interface itself to associated domains to application keys. This would allow sharing of one set of physical files, with the capability to share common templates and themes. Pages would need to be able to target specific application keys through the UI.

In my humble opinion, it would be relatively straightforward for Telerik to offer an Enterprise Edition of the Sitefinity product.

Please add your thoughts if you think that this would be something you would also be interested in. I am sure that Telerik will be more likely to prioritize this if they see that there is a lot of interest.

    Kind regards,
    Gary

    Hello Gary,

    Thank you for the feedback.

We have definitely considered offering other types of licenses for Sitefinity CMS. However, we are not able to provide any specific time frame as to their implementation.

Please, note that as of now we offer partner discounts which are very suitable for enterprise clients. Our sales department will follow-up with you on this request. In case you need to contact them directly, please, use this email address: sales@telerik.com.

As on the second point, could you, please, provide more details on your idea and the result you want to be able to achieve?

    Regards,

    Hello Bob,

Thank you for your feedback. To clarify my second point:

Currently, Sitefinity supports multiple websites sharing the same database. However, it does not support multiple websites sharing the same set of file system files. This is in large due to the dependency on the applicationName property in the web.config file as the key to differentiating websites within the database.

What I would like to do is to point 19 different domains to the same IP address, and configure within the Sitefinity user interface which pages belong to which domains. It is a design goal that all the websites can share the same templates, themes, shared content, news, and content from other modules.

I'm revising my original suggestion a little. Let's leave the applicationName alone because we still want to be able to maintain collectively the shared items.  I would like to see an additional area called "Domains" added to the properties of a page. An empty value (the default) would mean that the page applies to all domains. A comma-delimited list would allow the page to be restricted to specific-domains.

Would you be able to suggest how I could extend Sitefinity to accomplish this?

    Thanks,
    Gary

    Hi Gary,

    That’s a good idea indeed.

However, I think it would be better if we add support for multiple data providers for pages instead of properties. They will work in similar way as Generic Content. Then we can map domain names with providers. This approach will allow different sitemaps and permissions per domain and therefore management of multiple sites in one application. It will also allow separate data storage in case this is appropriate.

I logged this as a feature request in our product backlog. Unfortunately I’m unable to give a time frame now.

Thank you very much for your involvement. Your Telerik points have been updated.

Any comments or suggestions are very much appreciated.
