    Hi,

I am trying to get my head around SiteFinity and how to take it to market for my customers. It's a great product so don't get this wrong but I find that it's a bit harder to integrate your code behind than it was with for example r.a.d. designer.

I'll use an example to further explain my issues and then I hope for a debate and maybe some pointers how my concerns could be addressed.

Telerik has just released r.a.d. controls Q2 2005 with new versions on most of the controls that form part of SiteFinity. As a very happy subscriber to r.a.d. controls I want to make use of these new features in SiteFinity. The problem I have with for instance r.a.d PanelBar is that it is not backward compatible so the two versions (the one in SiteFinity and the new one) can't coexist (or maybe I don't know how). If they could coexist then you could just put the new version in a user control that you make available from the designer in SiteFinity. I understand you will lose the automatic navigation "pickup" unless you added that functionality yourself, which can be done with a bit of effort.

This was really just to query Telerik if any thought has been put into this or you should look at r.a.d. controls as a totally separate product compared to SiteFinity and just wait for the new control versions to be incorporated in a new release.

I apologize for the verbosity but I felt I needed someone to discuss this with.

    Best regards
    Bert

Hello Bert, thank you for sharing your views about telerik.

Next week we will release a new Sitefinity version which will include all of the latest versions which were released within the r.a.d.controls suite. The new version will be free to all Sitefinity license holders.

    Best Regards,
    the telerik team

    Thanks for the quick reply.

Well, that's good news. Is the plan to always stay up to date in this area, ie can we expect new r.a.d controls to be incorporated reasonably quickly in SiteFinity?

    Best regards
    Bert

Yes, Bert, we will update Sitefinity with the latest versions fairly often. Since most of the latest releases are major (i.e. menu 2.x vs 3.0), the changes/improvements are quite a bit and thus we will release a new, updated Sitefinity version. Afterwards, if a new, minor version (v3.0 vs. v3.0.2) of the nav/editor controls come out, then you will be able to do it yourself - shouldn't take more than 10 minutes.

    Hi Telerik,

It's now three weeks since you said a new release of SIteFinity would be available. No pressure, just interested in a bit of an update when we can expect this.

    Thanks
    Bert

    Hi Bert,

Indeed, the new version of Sitefinity version has been pushed back. Actually, we decided to not release an intermittent version with the new telerik controls but rather to provide a new (v2.0) of Sitefinity with Netscape/Firefox/Mozilla and Mac support and updated controls. V2.0 of Sitefinity will be released in the beginning of June.

    Here's a list of what's new:

    1. Improved API (no more DataTables and DataSets but meaningful collections and classes instead) which significantly improves the developer experience
    2. Ability to take advantage of the workflow mechanism for third-party controls (News, Testimonials, etc)
    3. Support for multiple languages sites (localized page details, control contents, etc)
    4. Diff for control contents
    5. Mozilla, Netscape and Firefox support
    6. Public users / permissions which will enable creating a secure site area
    7. Content Expiration (not certain it will make it)
    8. More out-of-the-box controls – testimonials, FAQ
    9. Built-in friendly navigation using page names
    10. WebService wrapper control

As you can see, we are working on some really great stuff that will allow you to build even more powerful websites and web-applications. We hope the small delay will not slow you in your development.

    Greetings,
    the telerik team

The new version seems to have a more robust api.  Are there continued plans for more out-of-the box controls?

    Hello Daniel,

Yes, we do have such plans. Now that we have laid down a good foundation for the product, we will start enriching Sitefinity with various add-ons that provide more out-of-the-box functionality. These add-ons will be available as part of the core product and will come with source. This should allow you to extend them easily.

We also count on you guys to share interesting add-ons that could help your peers with the implementation of some common site elements and admin tasks.

    Hello,

I was interested in standard modules that are available to be used within Sitefinity. i would be nice e.g. to have modules like a weblog , forum.
Are there plans to integrate these modules in sitefinity or are third party product available?

    Kind regards,

    Frank Blom

    Hi Frank,

Yes, we have plans to offer such modules and we plan to start working on them in the next 6 months. They will probably be available separately, i.e. they will not come with Sitefinity by default, but rather will be separate downloads. The idea is to offer modules provided not only by us, but by our customers as well.

At this time we do not have an exact list of modules we will provide, but a Forum module will be one of the first to be offered. We will very much appreciate the community's feedback on what types of modules are most needed.

As to 3rd party products, you can use anyone you like, as far as it is implemented as a control (ascx).
