History Section

We have setup a site using sitefinity and have noticed that the history control in the admin section does not keep track of the changes as they are made. We have been making changes to the site and they are not showing up in the history section. Every so often the changes will show up, but very random. Is this a  bug or are there some settings I need to check on?

Hello Jim, as mentioned in the Administration Manual (Workflow -> History section) "the History tool displays a list of all past Workflow tasks performed by the current user." In other words, not all changes are tracked which is a limitation of the current Sitefinity version. For example changes made to the content of a cell will not show in the admin section.

Could you tell us which actions did you expect to be tracked?

Well, I had made a page Navigable and then changed it back and published the changes. I didn't see anything in the history section about this. As for the content changes, will this be added to a later version?

As an upgrade, what about showing all actions taken by all users if you are an administrator. Maybe have a switch that you could flag to toggle back and forth between all users actions and the current users actions. This way an administrator could keep track of all actions taken on a site.

    Thanks for the reply.

    Hi Jim,

It looks like you have directly submitted this page for publishing, skipping the approval process. When you create a page this step is not registered in the History section. However steps like "Submit For Approval", "Approve", "Decline", etc. are registered. In the current version the "Submit For Publishing" step is omitted from these steps as you could see the pages pending for publishing in the "Publish Site" section but it sounds like a very reasonable suggestion that we should track such changes in the History.

Yes, in the next version we should definitely update the "Intray" section and make it track more changes. Perhaps we should make some rearrangements to this section.

The suggestion for the feature which will allow the administrator to toggle between different users' history screens also sounds very nice and we have added it to our TODO list for some of the next version of Sitefinity.

    We really appreciate your feedback.

    Hello Richard Chimelis,

A new version of a page or content item is created when this page is opened for editing and object is added to a transaction. Modification related to a page properties are not tracked. This applies for 3.7 SP1 as well and all Generic Content Items. We have already created the API for pages. I believe that we will manage to extend the workflow and versioning manager for the official release of 4.0.

    Kind regards,
    Ivan Dimitrov
