Sitefinity 2.5

Had a question as to upgrading a 2.0 site to 2.5. Do we need to do any updating to the DB and replace DLL's or just replace dl's and possibly the RadControls and RadControlsResources folders?

Also, I noticed that the text at the bottom of the Project Manager page still references v2.0: (FYI)

"Give the ASPNET user full permissions for the Sitefinity2.0/Primavera/Database, Sitefinity2.0/BlogSpace/Database and Sitefinity2.0/Projects folders. "

    Hello Jim,

You would be able to upgrade your Sitefinity 2.0 projects to version 2.5, probably at the end of the week, when a convertor will be released. You will not need to update your database and dlls manually.

Thanks for the text note - we will change it and renovate it for the new version. Your points were updated.

    Best wishes,

I already have the site built out and I am have some custom controls already pushed into the site. Will I have any problems with trying to update using the converter? Is there a way that I can manually do this, just to be on the safe side?

    Hello Jim,

You shouldn't have any problems with your custom controls. The only thing the convertor does with controls is to replace the old ones shipped with Sitefinity with the new ones. If you have made changes to the controls shipped with Sitefinity, they will be overriden and will not be saved.
I therefore recommend that before you convert your old project to the new version of Sitefinity to backup the application and the database.

    Hello Jim.

We are very sorry for the delay of the converter. It is almost ready, but we want to be sure that you and our other clients will have as little problems as possible when upgrading to the new version. We are currently testing the converter as we found some small issues related to converting projects which have been previously converted to VS.NET 2005 projects.

You will be able to download the converter tomorrow. We apologize again for the delay.

    Greetings,
    Robert

    Hello Greg,

The converter is available for download from your Sitefinity Client.net as a separate setup file - Sitefinity_2_5_ProjectConverter.msi. You could install it into the Sitefinity 2.5 folder.

    Sincerely yours,

I am having trouble trying to using the project converter. Overall what I am trying to do is update from a StandAlone 2.0 Project Trail to a 2.5 Single Developer.

I installed the developer version of 2.5. It created a new program files folder. In reality i would of liked it to automatically pick up my old projects from 2.0 and put them in 2.5. Here are the steps I did to try and manually convert.

    .9 Backup of course
    1. The project was converted to VS.2005 before i tried to convert
    2. I copied the project directory to another location setup another IIS virtual directory with folder permission. So I had a 2.0 Trail version running on my new virtual directory. It was working as normal.
    3. I used project convert to update the project.
    4. I got this error message http://www.happen.biz/downloads/2.0-2.5ConvertError.JPG

    I have downloaded these files.
    SiteFinity_2_5_1_dev.exe
    Sitefinity_2_5_1_dev_hotfix.zip
    Sitefinity_2_5_ProjectConverter.msi

What are each of them for?
What do i do with the hotfix?
I am thinking maybe all i needed was to replace the hotfix files in my project directory.

    Hello Michael,

I suspect that you got the error "2.0-2.5ConvertError.JPG" because some the new assemblies were not replaced by the project converter. Maybe they were being used by another process during the conversion. Or, maybe the project was opened in VS.NET. You can manually replace all DLL files in the bin folder getting them from Sitefinity2.5\bin folder.
Below is a short explanation on the files you asked about:

SiteFinity_2_5_1_dev.exe - uninstall v2.5.0 and install v2.5.1 to upgrade Sitefinity
Sitefinity_2_5_1_dev_hotfix.zip - replace the files in your project directory
Sitefinity_2_5_ProjectConverter.msi - the project converter should be installed into Sitefinity2.5.0. It is also shipped with v2.5.1 setup, so if you have installed Sitefinity2.5.1, you don't need it.
