Experiances with DiscountASP.NET as a hosting provider?

    I see that discountasp.net is a hosting parter of Sitefinity and am leaning towards using them as the provider for my project. What I thought was a bit odd was that when I searched their forums (where they tell you to go for technical support) for "Sitefinity" there were zero responses.

    I figure that this is either really good or really bad. I'm posting this to ask the community about their own experiences working with discountasp.net or if you feel strongly about recommending another provider.

    My trepidation comes from having already run into problems deploying to our QA/Staging servers and having had problems that I had to use remote desktop to correct. I've read the KB article here about deploying to discountASP.NET but I'd like to hear from your own experiences.

    Oh my goodness. I spent much more time this weekend and today trying to get my site working on DiscountASP.Net than I had imagined.

    For anyone trying to setup a new site on their server where it's going to be hosted in IIS7 do yourself a favor and read the document named IIS7.doc zipped and attached in this thread:

    Before I found this document I had spent hours of time rambling around forums here and on the discountasp.net forums trying to find a solution. If I had found this earlier it would have saved me a day of debugging and my client a lot of grief. Sticky that thing please :)

    Also, after deploying I found that many of my image pathes were no longer working. Tedius to update but easy to do so through the CMS.

    Sorry I'm coming to this thread a little late.

    I used Sitefinity for Goondocks.com for several months.  Overall, I was happy with the service I received.  There are certainly some setup issues, but it looks like you've battled through most of those already.

    The other issue you might encounter is DiscountASP.net recycling (restarting) your web application during non-use.  If you web site gets light use, it gets unloaded from memory.  The "start-up" costs associated with reloading your application can result in slow load times.

    To prevent this I used DiscountASP.net's control-panel to schedule an automated request to my web site every 15 minutes.  This prevented my web site from being recycled.

    I was having major performance problems with DiscountASP when initially signed up for their Windows 2003 hosting. The symptoms were very slow performance in the Admin area, getting logged out every 5 mins or so due to application pool recycling which was v.frustrating if editing a page.

    Sitefinity is working very well now on DiscountASP after doing the following: 
    - do all the steps listed above & in the knowledge base article for DiscountASP (e.g. disable health monitoring, setup up scheduled task to ping the site, enable caching)
     
    Plus:
    - upgraded to Windows 2008 / IIS 7 hosting with DiscountASP. You get twice the memory in the application pool with IIS 7 (200 mb instead of 100 mb).
    - set a machine key in web.config - this prevents the logout issue.
    - enabled Workflow - this had the result of making the editing of pages seem faster for the end users. They can then publish pages in bulk.

    The knowledge base article about setting up a Sitefinity site at discountasp.net talks about windows 2008 but not sql 2008. Is there a reason why it suggests to select a sql 2005 instead of 2008 database?

    And, just to be sure, can anyone confirm that everything (specially the upload control) within Sitefinity works well on a shared hosting plan at AspDiscount.net?

    Hi Tys,

    There are not any problems related to the SQL platform. I am using SQL server 2008 and W 2008 as a development environment. Most probably the price per month for SQL 2005 is less than this one for SQL  Server 2008. However it is better to work with the latest version of a product.

    I would definitely NOT recommend DiscountASP.net if you're using them for anything other than a development website. They are not suitable for production websites because you will soon encounter the dreaded '503 service unavailable' message as they appear to limit the number of concurrent connections that your website can have. One of my sites only gets about 400 visits a day but that's still enough so that this message starts appearing. DiscountASP support won't do anything to fix it, so am looking for a new host - hosting.com perhaps...

    Hello Julia,

    Of course the best option is using dedicated or VPS if you are planning to have a big website. Most of the hosting plans - shared and already defined are suitable for small and medium websites.

    I completely agree with Julia. Even if you have a low traffic site, you will see a huge amount of 503 Service Unavailable error.
    Their support is also of poor quality. 1st level support does not even understand anything and gives stupid replies like "set up a customized 503 error page".
    When my technical team explained in detail and also provided them a solution for this error - they refused to fix it.

    I am thinking of moving to a new host. ..I won't recommend Discountasp.net!
