The Challenge

Featuring six of the world’s top male tennis players, the Capitala World Tennis Championship is a stunning showcase of professional sporting talent. Held at the Abu Dhabi International Tennis Complex – Zayed Sports City, the tournament’s 2009 edition brought together Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer, Nikolay Davydenko,Andy Murray, Andy Roddick and James Blake.
Alongside the competing stars, the three-day tournament featured a multitude of attractions including a unique spectator village with interactive family-friendly areas to engage and entertain visitors. The event format consisted of players competing in a single elimination series of matches, with the final match featuring the two best players left standing.
Omnia was commissioned to create a striking web presence that seamlessly complemented the high-profile offline activities that had been conceptualized for the tournament. The website’s tasks were manifold - promote the event, provide information to visitors before, during and after the event; hold live information during the event and make news updates an easy task, broadcast live scores from the event, and finally, capture user information.

The Solution

Sitefinity provided Omnia with the ideal platform from which to kick-start the web presence process. Through Sitefinity’s web tools, Omnia was able to Build a rich, multi-language website for the event. Further, Sitefinity’s built-in right-to-left support empowered Omnia to enrich the site with relevant content including detailed information about the players, venue and the tournament itself.

In addition, Omnia was also able to construct a media centre to update fans and the press with images and text news, whilst facilitating easy access to ticket as well as corporate booking information. The Sitefinity News and List modules were used to construct parts of the media centre, while Omnia duly developed a custom Image Gallery taking the modular and extendable CMS at hand.

Traffic was driven to the website using strategic online advertising in several of the region’s most popular entertainment and social network sites. Omnia further created a community cup page to generate recognition for the sport within the UAE, while short online polls managed to obtain visitor information for Capitala in an unobtrusive manner.

Sitefinity’s build-in poll modules helped Omnia save development time and focus on content and creative. Using Sitefinity as the development framework provider enabled Omnia to react quicker to changes and update requests – a case in point being the Page Module, whose build-in history and rollback functionality was a big time-saver.

The Results

The Capitala website garnered over 150,000 visitors during the week of the event.
A majority of users browsed the website to get venue, tournament and player information. The client was most appreciative of the fact that the website worked in perfect harmony with the tournament’s offline identity, while retaining a unique look and feel that grabbed visitor attention.

So while the tournament itself was nabbed by Britain’s rising star Andy Murray, it’s safe to say that the Omnia – Sitefinity partnership was an undisputed winner too.
