The Schaumburg Park District uses Sitefinity for website redesign project

  • Industry
    Government / Recreation
  • Background
The Schaumburg Park District is service oriented in its pursuit of providing versatile leisure opportunities and the preservation of open space that promotes the wellbeing of the residents.
  • Challenge
The previous website was considered by many to be static, boring, out of date, and could not accommodate the improvements SPD was looking to make.
  • Why Sitefinity
Links Technology recommended Sitefinity based on its work flow features and module extensibility.
  • Technical Details
2 designers, 1 developer, 2 people migrating content
  • Results
The project, from concept to live website, took one third of the time of similar projects where Sitefinity was not utilized.
The Challenge

Redesign the Schaumburg Park District’s website, which consists of a multitude of pages. Enable SPD personnel to maintain the site’s content via a content management system. In addition, allow the following website elements to be managed as structured data:
• News
• Calendar of Events
• Document Library
• Photo Gallery

The Solution

Setup and implementation was a joint effort between SPD and Links Technology (LINKS). Since SPD decided to host their website on a virtualized Windows 2003 server, it was ideal for LINKS to build out the server, install and configure Sitefinity, and develop the website at LINKS’ office location. Microsoft SQL Server was selected as the back end database and was initially installed and configured on the same virtual machine (VM). After the site was built and ready for content, the VM was delivered to the SPD facility. Then, SPD personnel moved the database from the local SQL Server to their production database server. Sitefinity’s built-in news module offered critical website functionality.

SPD’s requirements were unique in a number of areas, so LINKS elected to build the following custom Sitefinity modules:
• Events Calendar
• Document Library
• Photo Gallery
The project also included the development of custom Flash elements as page accents. The content migration was completed by SPD staff.

The Results

Sitefinity’s core CMS functionality and built-in modules are great productivity tools. These were instrumental in enabling SPD personnel to build out the site’s content and in completing the website project. More importantly, Sitefinity’s extensible architecture for building custom modules was critical to the success of this project as LINKS was able to build custom application software and integrate it seamlessly into the Sitefinity-based solution.tance of the support team at Telerik, the project was deemed a resounding success.
