Hello Sitefinity Team

Last weekend I read an article about Joomla release 1.5. Probably you know this is an opensource cms build by volunteer developers.
This brought me to the idea that it would be great to have a developer network platform for Sitefinity too. I don't mean that Sitefinity should be changed to an opensource platform. But maybe there is an interest among Sitefinity developers/users to exchange custom control developments, knowledge etc.. in a developer network platform.

Although Sitefinity has a lot of functionality in itself, I still have developed a lot of new functionality (functionality that is not part of Sitefinity yet) in my Sitefinity websites like custom controls (an Image control (upload, crop, scale, mirrot etc), image gallery, rounded corner control, ) custom membership and role privider, translation etc..

Because I believe that a lof of other Sitefinity developers are doing the same, so inventing the wheel each time again and again, it would be great if these developments could be exchanged in a Sitefinity developer network platform.
This would be good for Sitefinity developers, but could be good for telerik/Sitefinity too. Usefull developments could be used as basis in future releases of Sitefinity.

Is there an interest for this idea? Or are there any plans already?

Kind regards
Luc Baeten

Hello Luc Baeten,

thanks for the input. We have already started with some preliminary planning about something similar to what you are suggesting. We completely see your point and you are completely right that we should have something of a sort.

I'll be blogging more about this in the future so your feedback and ideas, together with those from the other members of community will be much appreciated.

Once again, thank you for proactively thinking how to make things better.

Sincerely yours,
Ivan

Hello Ivan

Could you say something more about the timeline of this planning? When can we expect something like this?

Regards

This would be a great idea and I would look forward to being both a user and a contributor in the SDN.

Hello guys,

well the thing is that we are making up few plans, which all differ in the scope and therefore in the time needed for implementation. So, I really can't say much at this point but we are evaluating our options and the community will be consulted once we have our plans straight.

I am really sorry that I am not able to give you any more information on this really exciting topic, but I promise we'll keep you posted.

Once again, thank you for the posts, because you've just convinced us even more that this is something needed indeed.

Greetings,
Ivan

Another suggestion for the SDN is to have a location where developers can upload articles or modules to the site to share.

Hi Joseph,

yes, more or less that's one of the things we are contemplating at the moment.

Thank you all for great suggestions.

For the time beeing you could use CodePlex for this? If someone has a really neat module that could be improved by others, sharing it would be great.

I started with the first module, a rewrite of the Contacts sample module, with a hot to article.  http://www.codeplex.com/SEVDNUGContacts/

I should have posted this weekend, a Linq Provider for the same module.
