I've installed the community edition on my computer but I'm not able to do much with it.

1) I tried creating a new project. I gave it a name, selected the Community template, but it fails while creating the project with the message "".

2) So I tried editing the TIUSite_v3.2_SP2 site. (Luckily I guessed that the login is "admin" / password "admin" -- there is no documentation provided which would state that.) While working in the Pages section, it seems that all of the pages do not physically exist. For example when I click on Home in the left-hand site map, it results in a ASP.NET "The resource cannot be found" error, because the file /telerik/TIUSite_v3.2_SP2/Home.aspx does not exist. Nor do any of the other pages.

In addition, during set up, the TIUSite was created wrong in IIS. The virtual directory that was created in IIS pointed to C:\Program Files\Common Files\telerik\web\TIUSite_v3.2_SP2 which was an empty directory. Luckily I figured it out and fixed it to point to C:\Program Files\telerik\Sitefinity3.2 Community\WebSites\TIUSite_v3.2_SP2.

Please help. So far this has been a very frustrating experience.

I'm having the same problem. I installed the newest community version with a view to upgrade it if it works.

I tried the following:
- Installed a new to default location "C:\Program Files\telerik\Sitefinity3.2 Community"
- Ran the setup wizard from start
- Tried to create a new site called "test" using all the templates (personal and community)
- Noticed in "C:\Program Files\telerik\Sitefinity3.2 Community\WebSites" creates a folder called "test" then after a minute or so I get the error msg:
"Unable to create the virtual directory: Exception has been thrown by the target of an invocation."

- The newly created folder then is deleted.

I therefore think the problem is creating something poss the db?

I then tried to access the sample site. I also noticed the iis was setup wrong and re-pointed the iis to the correct location "C:\Program Files\telerik\Sitefinity3.2 Community\WebSites\TIUSite_v3.2_SP2"

I got the first error message:
"An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections"

Checked the connection string in webconfig and changed the Data Source=.\SQLExpress to Source=.\FULL2005

I then got the error msg
The user instance login flag is not supported on this version of SQL Server. The connection will be closed.

So I removed the User Instance=True and then I got
Unable to open the physical file "C:\Program Files\telerik\Sitefinity3.2 Community\WebSites\TIUSite_v3.2_SP2\App_Data\Sitefinity.mdf". Operating system error 5: "5(error not found)".
An attempt to attach an auto-named database for file C:\Program Files\telerik\Sitefinity3.2 Community\WebSites\TIUSite_v3.2_SP2\App_Data\Sitefinity.mdf failed. A database with the same name exists, or specified file cannot be opened, or it is located on UNC share.

All I want to see is something working!!! Can I just download another sample from somewhere?

Hello Keith and Joe,

1. "Unable to create the virtual directory:"
Please, refer to our online Troubloeshooting section that explains in details the reason for the error.
2. "An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server..."
If I understand correctly you use the default connection. So make sure that you have SQL Express installed on your machine. Also, check if the ASPNET account has full permissions on the App_Data folder

The third and the fourth exceptions ("The user instance login flag is not supported ..." and "Unable to open the physical file...") are caused by the modifications you have made on the connection string. Please, note that it is not necessary to make any changes on the connection string.

Regarding Community template issue, what is the exact message of the error that you have received after selecting it.

Also, I would recommend you read System Requirements in the Installation Guide before you proceed with the new installation and make sure that your computer suits all of them.

Regarding the Community template issue, the error I get is: "Unable to create the virtual directory: Unknown name. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x80020006 (DISP_E_UNKNOWNNAME))"

(I must have forgotten to paste it in my last post.)

The steps I follow are:
1. From the Project Manager screen, I click "Create new project".
2. I enter a name ("SitefinityTest") and click Next.
3. On the "Create New Project" screen I select the Community Template and click "Create this project".
4. The "Creating the project" page displays. During this time I can see the SitefinityTest folder and its files being created. Then suddenly I get redirected back to the Create New Project screen, the error is displayed at the top, and the SitefinityTest folder is deleted from my computer.

Please follow the advice from our Troubleshooting section Unable to create the virtual directory. Unknown name.

I am using iis 5.1. This is what I've done so far.

Anonymous Authentication is disabled. - Unticked the "Anonymous access" check box from the "directory security" tab > "edit (under Anonymous access and authentication control)
ASP.NET Impersonation is enabled. - Added the line <identity impersonate="true" /> to the webconfig
Forms Authentication is disabled. - Not too sure how to do this - Can you point me in the right direction?
Windows Authentication is enabled. - checked the tick box located in the same place as the "Anonymous tickbox""

Hi joe,

To verify that Forms Authentication is disabled, follow the instructions below:

    1. Run IIS.
    2. Right-click Sitefinity3.x virtual folder and select Properties.
    3. Click the ASP.NET tab.
    4. Click Edit Configuration button to open ASP.NET Configuration Settings window.
    5. Click the Authentication tab.
    6. Check the selected value for the Authentication mode property. It must be Windows instead of Forms.

Have a look at the attached screenshot for more information.

Also, you said you are using winxp SP2, SQL Express 2005 and VS 2005. What about the .NET Framework? Please note that Sitefinity requires .NET version 2.0.

Hi

I'm still having a few problems. I checked the above authentication, but I still get the error:
Unable to create the virtual directory: Exception has been thrown by the target of an invocation.

Is there a way for me to try and pin point where that exception is from my side? I am using .net 2.0

Hi joe,

"Unable to create the virtual directory" exception is related to the IIS configuration.

The Project Manager impersonates the ASPNET account as the currently logged user. Please check in the top right corner of the Project Manager screen what account is being used at the moment. This user should be granted full permissions to the WebSites folder. The ASP.NET machine account should also have full permissions to this folder.

In case everything is properly set and you are still getting the error, you need to create the project manually as described in the Troubloeshooting section.

If the information above does not help to localize the problem, please give us remote access to your machine to investigate what is wrong.

I'm not sure http://www.sitefinity.com/sf3/troubleshooting.html is the correct link to manually create the project, can you check or am I going blind?

The link provides some troubleshooting tips to help you diagnose and resolve known problems. You should follow "InstallationGuide_3_2.pdf " and "UserManual_3_2.pdf" in order to install the application properly. The poblem is due to some configuration settings. I had the same problems when I install my application under Windows Vista. It took me a lot of time to figure out what the problem was.
