Pages locked in community version

Hi there,
I have been trialling your standard version for our community website. TOday I also downloaded the community version to create a website for a community group I am involved with. Managed to install sql express and the community version by myself (very pleased!) with only a couple of minor problems that I managed to solve. Opened the project and created pages. Modified the community template I am using. But when I go to put text into each page through edit page - none of the content boxes are active - the whole page is greyed out. I cant see how/where to unlock it or get it to work. The template looks fine when I edit it, the content placeholders all look fine and active. But the pages themselves do not allow me to edit anything. Tried creating new pages, copying pages, everything. Didnt have this problem in the standard version but I am using SQL Server for that one and the normal version, and not the community template as I am doing now. Any ideas?
