  • Rio Rico Fire Dept.

    • Industry
    • Background
Located in the center of Santa Cruz County, Arizona, the Rio Rico Fire District is the agency with direct responsibility for 911 fire and medical calls, as well as wildland firefighting for the Rio Rico and surrounding community.
    • Challenge
Convert an old open-source platform website into a new site with added functionality under a compressed timeframe due to client and previous service provider domain hosting issues.
    • Why Sitefinity
Rio Rico fire department has many skilled employees, however they do not have a web designer and/or graphic designer on staff and needed a CMS that is simple to update and use.
    • Technical Details
After settling on a design recommended by Simply Bits, the implementation phase of the Rio Rico fire department website took approximately one week and the focus of one designer and one project manager.
    • Results
The Sitefinity implementation allows the Rio Rico Fire Department staff to easily add and update content on their website providing citizens in their region access to current & accurate information.
  • The Challenge

The previous Rio Rico website was built by an individual using an open source platform which helped to initially keep costs down, however when that individual was no longer available the website deteriorated over time due to being unmanaged. As technology consultants, Simply Bits engaged with the Rio Rico Fire District to work on the site, the former website was severely dated in its design and content.

Rio Rico representatives could not manage the original site because the previous system didn’t have a uniform admin interface and as personal changed the previous designer did not train the new Rio Rico staff. After some time the website was no longer supported, and only basic changes could be made. As this problem dragged on, newer versions of web browsers released were not able to process the content correctly and the website became more obsolete. Rio Rico Fire District, as a political subdivision of the State of Arizona, also has an obligation to comply with State of Arizona open meetings law. They were not able to update the website and post meeting agendas and minutes and therefore were not able to comply with the law.

When Rio Rico received a notification that their hosting was expiring with their hosting provider at the time, they called on Simply Bits to assist with the creation and deployment of a new website

    The Solution

Simply Bits designed a superior website that made it easy for the Rio Rico Fire District constituents to find information, as well as made it easy for the District’s staff to update and add content—without technical knowledge. Rio Rico Fire District had several requirements for a new content management system including the ability to showcase and manage district meeting/training facilities, the ability to upload images and files, the ability to add pages and content in response to community events or fire-related events.

Simply Bits worked with the District’s staff to create and deploy an entire site within 1 calendar week. Simply Bits provided existing content from the old site to Rio Rico Fire for revision and approval. While the district revised the site content, Simply Bits utilized the new Sitefinity 4.0 CMS and implemented a new design and page structure. As content was approved it was added back to the site using the new admin interface.

    The Results

The result is that the Rio Rico website is now an interface for the surrounding community with the Rio Rico Fire District, as well as fully compliant with applicable laws, rules, and regulations for fire districts in the state of Arizona. The website is now used for many different functions including locating employment information with the district, special events being held by the district and other organizations, safety trainings, and facility/training room schedules and rental agreements. Constituents can also subscribe to meeting notifications through website, and obtain contact information for specific individuals within the district and where those individuals are located throughout the district.
