I am trying to style the heading page of a vertical navigation element when it is selected, however unlike the child elements it doesn't seem to have a selected state. The child elements add the class rtsSelected to the class when they are selected. This is on a simple vertical menu with showparentpage set to true.

Is there a way to enable the selected it to add a selected class to the parent page as well?

Actually, the Vertical navigation doesn't add a selected class to the parent item, as you properly pointed out.
I have attached a simple PanelBar navigation, which works the same way, but also sets a selected class to the parent item.
    Hope this helps.
