I have a challenge with my site.  I have setup the news module with certain categories: west coast and east coast.  I then put controls onto pages to display the news based on category.  I select the controls from the pretty Properties page using checkboxes.  All very civilized and nice to use.

However, my client now wants to change the name of the categories.  They want change west coast to be Pacific and east coast to be Atlantic.  I go in and make the change and find that all my controls are no longer displaying news items.  They are blank.

When I look at the properties, I get the checkboxes, but there is text that says 'error'.

I can only get around this by ...
    1) edit the control's property to display all categories and saving
    2) i reopen the property box and my new category names are displayed fine
    3) i select the appropriate category and save

Now, I realize that there is a work-around, but this work flow is quite involved when you consider that I have the control on many different pages spread throughout the site.  I consider the situation where my client wants to rename the categories again and think of all the time that will be wasted with manually going through and updating each control.

Is there an automated method of updating my controls?
Is there an updated control that would link to internal category identifier (and not a static link to the category name)?

    Hello michael,

I regret to inform you that there is not automated method. Category is a metafield an you pass the name of desired category as string. We are going to implement required functionality from Sitefinity 4.0. Currently, only tags can be updated automatically, because you can pass Tag.ID through filter expression.

    Best wishes,
