    Sitefinity Team,

    I would like to add start and end date for Generic Content module so that the generic content display will based on the start and end date range. It's kind of like News module in the Sitefinity package. But I don't need News summary, author etc.

    Please let me know what the best way to accomplish this is.

    Thanks a lot
    Tim

    Sitefinity Team,

    I guess I am asking a sample code which can show me how to create a  new module based on the generic content module and add start date and end date to filter out the content for front end display.

    Thanks

    Hello Tim,

    We are currently preparing a custom pluggable module for you that will provide the functionality which you have described. Please, have in mind that a Forum ticket response time is 72 hours, and there are still another 25 hours left for us to make sure the module you receive is of a better quality. Hope this will not slow your work down too much.

    Hi Tim,

    Please, excuse us for providing the solution with some delay. I have attached the new module, called Demo. It is based on Generic Content. There are still some changes and some more settings I need to make but I believe it is better to provide you with the module now so that you have more time to test or modify it as you like. After I finish the improved version, I will send it to you as well.

    In the attachment, you will find the new Demo module as well as the files you need to add to your project in the corresponding folders. Have in mind that I have not included the assemblies in the /bin folders because they are too big. This project was created by Sitefinity 3.2 SP1.

    Hope this helps for now :)

    Hello Tim,

    Please, let me know if the provided module served its purpose. It seems that the changes we wanted to make to the module will be postponed, so I wanted to ask for feedback on the module. Did you encounter any problems, and do you need any assistance?

    Kind regards,

    Sonya,

    Sorry for the delay. The project I have been working on need
    Generic Content with start and end date and Newsletter module. I'm actually waiting for the SF v3.2 sp2 now. Then I will plug the Generic Content with start and end date module into sp2. I hope it's going to work on the sp2.

    Thanks a lot for your help and hope you could double check for me if the module is going to work on the sp2.

    I don't know what's going on with you guys. First of all, the Newsview in the Version 3.2 SP2 release doesn't work. Then you provided with 3.2 SP2 HF 1616 which it's very nice. But it turned out that the Image & document module doesn't work in the 3.2 SP2 HF 1616. All the download lists in the document & Image module doesn’t work.  And now it seems that no one even bother to provide any fixes for the Image & document module in the 3.2 SP2 HF 1616.

    For the post 'Generic Content with start and end date' I posted 4 days ago and I haven't heard anything back from you so far.

    I am sure you're going to lose a lot of customers if you continue doing this.

    Good luck!!!

    Hello Tim,

    Please excuse us for the delay. We did have a lot of problems with the implementation, and now with the custom module. Your Telerik points are updated because along the way of providing the module we encountered problems we had to fix.

    Here is the updated pluggable module.

    Please let us know if you have further questions.

    Sonya,

    Before I gave it up, I rebuilt the project which you gave to me and it works.

    My next question is that when you can provide the fixes for the image & document module in the 3.2 SP2 HF 1616 release because the download link for the module does not work. I still want to give a last try with my client and see if I can convince them to use the Sitefintiy instead of other CMS system.

    Thanks for your help.

    Hello Tim,

    Could you please provide us with more information on the issue with the DownList control. We tried different scenarios but could not reproduce it.

    As to the name of the Demo module, there are a lot of areas in which the name appears. Could you please specify which exactly is the place where the name appears and you want to change it. If you want to change it everywhere, open the control templates for the module (in Sitefinity and in Sitefinity/Administration folders of the project) and change the occurrences of Demo there. Also, change the names in the web.config file. Also, open the code of the  Demo module and change the names/ titles of the module there (specifically in the Control Panel and the Command Panel).

    Looking forward to your response.

    Sincerely yours,
    Sonya

    Tim,

    There is a far easier way to do what you want to do in my humble opinion - a method that is already immediately available in Siteinity and very very effective. We have done this heaps of times to suit different needs:

    If you want generic content with publication and expiry dates like the news module why don't you just add a second news provider as per the manual page 209 "Adding Providers".

    Then removed the summary and author fields that you don't want as per the manual page 206 "Adding Custom Meta Fields"  but in reverse of this process (eg you want to remove or hide metadata fields rather than add them) ... you don't have to use those fields you can remove or hide them from use if you like.

    Personally I think Telerik do an excellent job of providing assistance and example code however demanding that they build custom modules is not part of their licence agreement and I think it is a bit rough to have a go at them for not supplying a custom module within a certain time frame.

    The fact that they orginally supplied a working sample to you orginally is way above and beyond expectations I would think.

    Having said that can I make a suggestion to Telerik which might help us all? - a couple of times I have made pluggable modules and thought wouldn't it be a great idea (maybe in a KB article) if there was a spot on the Sitefinity site to download a C# Class Libray project which was a base plate for developing "generic content based" modules with all the minimum bits for workflow, tags, cats, rss, public and admin templates etc but no customisations as yet - just a blank canvas and this downloadable project was kept up to date with all the latest changes to "best practice" Sitefinity module development. eg. when you guys made a change to doing something like when you change the way the command panel worked you update the download project.

    We could then just download change the sample namespaces and away we go...

    There are a few examples of pluggable modules on Ivan's blog but they are a little too customised already to serve as a starting block for your next module project... something for you to consider that would benefit the wider community.

    Hope this helps,

    Seth

    I think I was a bit rough on the Sitefinity Support Team. They are doing a good job supporting Sitefinity Community users. Please do accept my apology here.

    At same time, please DO understand the pressure I got from the clients. For example, I went to an on site demo last month, before I start my demo, the first question my client ask me  was “Please give me a good reason why I should use your CMS (Sitefinity) system instead of Open Source and free CMS system”. As you know, there are a lot CMS systems out there in the market and a lot of them are open source and 100% free to the customers. Most of Open Source CMS systems also have Blog, News and Poll …etc.

    Basically, I want to setup the Sitefinity system to meet the Client’s need so that I can have more clients. The more Clients I can get, the more Sitefintiy license I am going to buy. I think that’s way to support Sitefinity.

    Sonya,

    I want to change everywhere has “demo” to “advertising”. Please give me some details how to do it.

    For the Image & document module, first I created a brand new library in images and documents module, then uploaded couple images into the library.

    After creating the library, I created a brand new page and drop the download list public control on the page. Next I choose the library I created for the download list.

    But for some reason, the download list doesn’t work at all. When I clicked the link, browser says “Page can’t be found”.

    Sonya, please let me know if you need more information.

    Seth,

    You don’t know how much I appreciated when Sitefintiy support team created the custom module for me. I think they are doing a great job too.

    I am programmer myself and have been doing programming for many years started with classic ASP, then asp.net 1.1, asp.net 2.0. I wrote a couple of intra-site modules in last 6 month.  I tried to write the pluggable module, but I just don’t know where to get started. I read the Ivan’s blog regarding writing pluggable module. The information on the Ivan’s blog just doesn't seem to be enough to get started. I need more explanation and samples on how to use the API and how to get started.

    Anyway, thank you very much for your suggestion. I will give a try and see which solution is better.

    Tim

    Hello Tim,

    May be you haven't set the IIS properly. Look at the following excerpt from the User Manual:

    To be able to upload and download files or view images and thumbnails in the Images & Documents
    module, you should set the ISAPI mappings for .sflb and .tmb extensions on your IIS virtual directory.
    Then, register the ContentHttpHandler handler for the extensions in the application web.config as well:
    <httpHandlers>
    <add verb="GET" path="*.sflb" type="Telerik.Cms.Engine.ContentHttpHandler, Telerik.Cms.Engine" />
    <add verb="GET" path="*.tmb" type="Telerik.Cms.Engine.ContentHttpHandler, Telerik.Cms.Engine" />
    </httpHandlers>

    For more information, please see the Images&Documents section in the User Manual.

    As to your first request on changing the name of the module, there is no automated way to do this.
    If you only need to change the title or name of the module, you could do that in ~\Demo\DemoModule.cs like that:
    /// <summary>
    /// Gets the name of the module.
    /// </summary>
    public override string Name
        get
        {
            return "Advertising"// previously: "DEMO"
        }

    /// <summary>
    /// Gets the module title which will appear in the navigation.
    /// </summary>
    public override string Title
        get
        {
            return "Advertising"// previously: "DEMO"
        }

    However, if you want to remove "Demo" from everywhere (like public control, code in web.config, etc), you need to go through all the code and manually change the occurrences of Demo to Advertising.

    Hello Seth,

    Thank you for the supportive words. It is really hard, and it means a lot when clients show their appreciation even in difficult moments like this one.

    Sonya,

    I know you must be really tired of me at this point. Please please bear with me and I'm almost there on this.

    The problem I have right now is that after changing the name from 'Demo' to 'Advertising', the public control doesn't work at all.

    First, there is only 'single Advertising'  control on the public site. The 'single Advertising list' public control is missing.

    After dragging the 'Single Advertising'  on the page, nothing shows up on the page.
