I am using Sitefinity 3.2 on a discountasp.net server.  I get prompted to log in CONSTANTLY while using the application.  It sometimes takes three log-ins to just upload an image to the library.

What is happening that is causing my session to expire?

    Hello Robert,

It seems that your session expire very quickly. Could you check whether cookies are enabled for your browser and you have full access over the folders. It is possible that the application pool is recycled frequently due to low memory, connection limits, bandwidth limits. When the application pool is recycled your authenticated session is lost and you are prompted to log in again.

    Sincerely yours,

I posted a note with my ISP.  Here is their response:

We host each account in its unique application pool / process.  To conserve memory, we recycle the application if any of the following condition is met

    1) More than 20 minutes of idle time (no http request in 20 minutes)
    2) The application uses more than 100MB memory
    3) The application uses more than 70% of CPU time

By default, the session information is stored in memory and recycling the application will also destroy the session variables.

You may want to consider using sql server session on your web application.
    https://support.discountasp.net/KB/a334/how-to-enable-aspnet-sql-server-session-on-your-web.aspx?KBSearchID=0

So I set up SQL Server session management, and it hasn't helped with the constant logging in.  We need a resolution to this problem ASAP.

    Thanks,
    Robert

    Hello Robert,

I cannot tell you for sure what the problem is. It seems that somehow the session cookies are removed and you are signed out. If this happens only during upload it could be permission issue over a folder or db and you are prompted to authenticate yourself. However, could you try the following:

    1. Check whether there is a error logged in the sitefinity.log file under App_Data folder.
    2. Check whether you have some custom implementation where you use FormsAuthentication.SignOut Method
    3. Check the website timeout in your web.config file and change the value if necessary.

    <forms name=".ASPNET" loginUrl="~/sitefinity/login.aspx" protection="All" timeout="1440" path="/"/>

Do you have these problems under development environment? Let us know about the result.

    All the best,

    Ivan,

Thank you for your responses.  I looked at the sitefinity.log file, and there are some logged exceptions.  Here is a digest of them:

    Exception Type: System.Security.Cryptography.CryptographicException
Message: Padding is invalid and cannot be removed.
    Source: mscorlib

    Exception Type: System.Web.HttpParseException
    Message: Root element is missing.
    Source: System.Web

Each of these occurs a few times,

I checked my forms element in my web.config and it has a timeout value of 1440.  Is that minutes?

I am not using the FormsAuthentication.SignOut method.

We love Sitefinity, but we can't demo it for our client until we get this resolved.  Please let me know if the above exceptions indicate something to you.

    Regards,
    Robert

    Hi Robert,

Thank you for getting back to me.

System.Security.Cryptography.CryptographicException  is thrown when an error occurs during a cryptographic operation. (when you try to use the RijndaelManaged class to decrypt data)
I cannot see the stack trace that could give me more information, but probably it is not related to Sitefinity. If you want you could attach the sitefinity.log or paste the last 2-3 errors that are thrown after you have been logged out.( you could backup your error log and clear the master. Then the you will be able to track the errors easily)

You could try adding the machine key node to your web.config file and see if the problem will disappear.

I checked my forms element in my web.config and it has a timeout value of 1440.  Is that minutes?

    -1440 seconds

    I van,

I deleted the text from the sitefinity.log file.  I then loaded and page a edited a generic content item.  I tried adding an image to the HTML and twice I was forced to log in.  I checked the sitefinity.log file after each log in and there is nothing there.

On the the third attempt at adding an image, I switched to HTML code, copied the generated HTML to the clipboard then clicked I'm Done.  All I see is a blank screen, but there are threeJavaScript errors.

    Components is not defined

    Parent.controlManager is not defined

Permission denied to call method Location.toString

Here is the URL that I see these errors on:

    http://tpgfwcom000.web139.discountasp.net/websites/theprojectsgroup/sitefinity/admin/CtrlProps.aspx?sfctrlid=ee7979ba-5afc-4f0e-b685-132c1d478b44&sfdefclid=GenericContent1&sfpageid=017142c2-cc44-46f0-bded-26906f89d3c2

Note that my content was committed to the database.

    Hello Robert,

controlManager is used when "I'm done" button is clicked. I am not able to tell you for sure what is the reason. It is really strange. Could you send me a username and password to ivan.dimitrov@telerik.com for you website. I would like to take a look. Also, do you have problems working in development environment?

    All the best,

    Hi Robert,

The problems is that the Role cookie is deleted during a request. I cannot find what is the reason for this.
It happens not every time. I was able to upload 10 images in the library and was asked only twice to login, because the role cookie was deleted.

Open your web.config file and set cacheRolesInCookie="false". Probably this will fix the issue.

    <roleManager enabled="true" cacheRolesInCookie="false" defaultProvider="Sitefinity"

I noticed that you use community version for 3.5 SP1 (not 3.2). To remove the logo, you need to apply one of the patches. For 3.5 SP1 the patch is Sitefinity_3_5_1747_standard_patch.zip.
Just swap the bin directory of your community project, with such from a standard edition.

Let us know if the problem with authentication persists after modifying your web.config file.

    Kind regards,
    Ivan Dimitrov

I have applied the patch as you instructed.  Although we no longer see the "powered by sitefinity cms" logo, this action did not fix the problem we are having with the constant logging in.

I am sending to you via email a complete back up of our site files, and well as a zip file of our database.

    Thanks.

Just wanted to add that we are having the same issue with discountasp constantly recycling the app pool. If you need any files from us, let me know. We're running 3.5 and just installed it on discountasp's servers on Friday.

Did you find out what is causing this?

We have a new install being hosted at CrysatlTech.com that appears to be doing the same thing.  I contact the ISP and they confirmed the application pool was NOT being recycled, yet we must log in multiple times to do anything in the admin.

    Hi Jason Green,

If the application pool is not recycled the problem could be in the cookie. You could check whether the following cookies are not cleared.

    .ASPXROLES
    ASP.NET_SessionId
    .ASPNET

Check whether you use FormsAuthentication.SingnOut() in a custom code. This method removes the forms-authentication ticket from the browser.

I am still looking into this but wanted to add more info.

∙ The log-off seems to be random.  No exact step reproduces the behavior.  It seems to hit some threshold and kicks out.

∙ We do not have any custom code running any log-in or log-off anywhere on this project

    Hello Jason Green,

There is not similar bug in Sitefinity. Something at your end clears the cookies and forms-authentication ticket from the browser and you are logged out.
