    Hello,

I have some confusion over the use of the RadControls for Sitefinity. The Sales FAQ states that you are not allowed to use the RadControls outside Sitefinity, but the forum post  http://www.sitefinity.com/support/forums/support-forum-thread/b1043S-mtaee.aspx seems to be saying that you can use them for Sitefinity based projects.

Am I correct in thinking that if I have a front-end website called "Fred" that is created by Sitefinity (has the Sitefinity and RadControls folders), that I can use the RadControls in the front end pages I am building but what I cannot do is use them outside of the Fred website?

Or do you mean I cannot use them in the front end but only in the CMS Admin tool?

    Thanks

    Richard

    Hi Richard,

You can use RadControls both in the front-end of your pages and in the CMS admin tool, as long as the pages are created in Sitefinity. The limitation is for sites created outside of Sitefinity, in Visual Studio for example. To use the controls in Sitefinity pages, you should add them to the toolbox by uploading or through web.config.

So if I create a user control in visual studio but it's for use inside my "Fred" project (that was created by sitefinity and uses sitefinity for cms), I cannot put the RadControls directly into the control via the Visual Studio toolbox?

I think what you are saying is that they can only be used by dragging them in through the Sitefinity admin tool? If so, would I then have full manipulation of say the RadGrid for databinding, hiding columns etc. in my code?

    Thanks

    Richard

    Hello Richard,

You CAN use RadControls in the user controls that you create for your site. However, you will not be able to do it from the Visual Studio toolbox. You will have to include a @Register directive in the markup of your user control and refer to the assembly containing the RadControl that you want to use. These assemblies are in the /bin subfolder of your project.
Even if you do not create you own user controls wrapping the RadControls, but use them by dropping from the Sitefinity toolbox, you will still be able to edit their properties using the Sitefinity property editor. You will be able to access the DataSource and similar properties to control databinding. For anything that you cannot achieve through Sitefinity, you can still revert to wrapping the RadContol in a user control.

    Sincerely yours,
    Slavo
