I hope this helps anyone who gets the same problem as me...

I have just installed the latest version of SiteFinity and I haven't had a good start...  I got the below error.  I know it is because SiteFinity3.0 is installed as a Virtual Application with the Parent Application being a Sitefinity 2.7 application.

    Server Error in '/telerik/Sitefinity3.0' Application.

    Configuration Error

Description: An error occurred during the processing of a configuration file required to service this request. Please review the specific error details below and modify your configuration file appropriately.

Parser Error Message: Section or group name 'security' is already defined. Updates to this may only occur at the configuration level where it is defined.

    Source Error:

    Line 13: <clear/>
    Line 14: <sectionGroup name="telerik">
    Line 15: <section name="security" type="Telerik.Security.SecuritySectionHandler, Telerik.Security" requirePermission="false"/>
    Line 16: <section name="nolics" type="Nolics.Helper.ConnectionSectionHandler, NolicsHelper" requirePermission="false"/>
    Line 17: <section name="workflow" type="Telerik.Workflow.WorkflowSectionHandler, Telerik.Workflow" requirePermission="false"/>

    Source File: E:\Projects\SiteFinity Files\Sitefinity3.0\web.config    Line: 15

Version Information: Microsoft .NET Framework Version:2.0.50727.42; ASP.NET Version:2.0.50727.210

It is obviously being caused by the normal inheritance of config files... now the thing is I can't figure out how to fix it.  I have tried a couple of things, typical Microsoft Style there are things documented which have no affect whatsoever on fixing the application,  I tried using the 'clear' and 'remove' child elements of the configSections element which still gave me the error.

I did a full Uninstall and a reinstall so that wasn't the problem.

In the end I noticed there was one small difference between the 2 web.configs... the 2.7 config was missing the requirePermission="false
on the handlers, once I added this, the <clear/> started working its magic..

    So to clarify:

    This: <section name="security" type="Telerik.Security.SecuritySectionHandler, Telerik.Security" />

    Needs to become:

    <section name="security" type="Telerik.Security.SecuritySectionHandler, Telerik.Security" requirePermission="false"/>

Well that was a waste of 2 hours.... some days you gotta love being a developer this is not one of those days...

I am sure I will be the only ID10T to get this problem...

    Hi Sean,

Currently Sitefinity does not support nested applications. I would appreciate your point of view on whether we should consider such support.

    Best wishes,

    Hi Bob,

I certainly can't speak for anyone else on this matter, but for myself it is only a temporary one... I am hosting a website currently on my development machine, just testing it out.... so it is probably not normal that people would ever install the applications as nested, this will probably ony be like this for a little while and then I can remove the parent application because it causes more problems than it is worth.

I think if anyone else does this you will hear about it more.  It isn't something that is important to me, just wastes me a little time when I do things, but that is my own fault....

    Thank you for asking anyway.

    Hello Sean,

Thank you for the additional information.

Your setup is indeed new to us, as far as Sitefinity goes. We will research the idea deeper if the interest in Sitefinity supporting nested applications is great enough.
