When I have international characters in the tooltip text of link properties, the tooltip text gets corrupted.

For intance, when I have this german text in a link tooltip:
"Hier klicken um zur Zürich-Seite zu kommen"

then this is what gets put into the page by SF as the title attribute of the link:
"Hier klicken um zur Zürich-Seite zu kommen"

This seems to be a bug.

    Regards, Mikael

    Hi Mikael Kleinwort,

I am not able to reproduce reported bug using HypreLink control. The tooltip displays characters as expected. Could you tell me whether you use the same control?

You could try setting Gobalization element in your web.config file to use utf-8. The UTF-8 encoding allows you to create multilingual content without having to change the encoding based on the target language

    Example:
    <globalization requestEncoding="utf-8" responseEncoding="utf-8"/>

    Hi Ivan,

I am not using hyperlink control - I tested it and you are right, the hyperlink control actually does not expose this bug.

The bug shows when I hava a generic content control and I place links or images inside of the generic content control. International characters like ü, ö, ä and so on, placed in the tool tip of links and images, are scambled big time.

And this des not seem to be a response encoding issue of the project. The scramble happens in the SityFinity project interface: I am editing a generic content control of a page: I am editing the tooltip of a link inside of the generic content control, lets say, I input the word "Zürich". Then I save the editedgeneric content control and I save the page. Then I go back into "edit page", look at the generic control, and the tooltip of the link contains scrambled characters.

However I tested your suggestion, but it doesn't make a difference.

    Regards, Mikael

    Hi Mikael Kleinwort,

I am not able to reproduce this issue. Take a look at the attached screenshots.
    You can check the following:

    1. Your pages use charset: utf-8 <meta http-equiv="content-type" content="text/html; charset=utf-8">
    2. You have utf-8 encoding in your web.config file <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8" ?>

If the above two settings are different from the ones in your project, please consider the following KB article:
Converting Unicode symbols to numeric HTML entities using a content filter
and apply the solution proposed there.

Let us know of the result.

    Hello Ivan,

I tested it on the SiteFinity demo site and there, the error does not appear.

I checked the settings you mentioned. My master page had the utf-8 settung in place, not so the web.config but I added this. However, the error still happens as described in my project.

    Any suggestions?

The only thing I can come up with is that it is a database issue. The database I created for the cms has the collation Latin1_General_CI-AS. Does this have any effect? I can't imagine, since unicode characters of any other fields are stored just fine, only the tooltip is being corrupted.

    regards, Mikael

    Hello Ivan,

I just created a new project, added the utf-8 encoding statement to the xml element of web.config as you suggested, created a page based on the SF default template (which is utf-8 encoded), added generic content with a link and the same bug appears here on my system.

    Hi Mikael Kleinwort,

Did you try the following KB http://www.telerik.com/support/kb/aspnet-ajax/editor/converting-unicode-symbols-to-numeric-html-entities-using-a-content-filter.aspx

No I did not. I would like to find out why this happens, before implementing a javascript fix for something which shouldn't happen in the first place....

I am willing to try out and test based on your input to find out about whats going on, though...

    Best regards, Mikael

I managed to reproduce the bug Mikael Kleinwort reported above on the website of demo page of Telerik University (at your website).

    Steps:

    1. Go to the Modules - > Generic Content management and create a new generic content.

    2. Create a hyperlink and set the URL Address textbox to a page within the website. If you select an outside page (ie http://www.google.gr the bug does not appear). The hyperlink must be in the form: [Sitefinity]<GUID> (for example: [Sitefinity]8fde5e65-e549-4399-a8d3-c58e9b8acd37)

3.On the tooltip textbox write something in a non-english language. For example I wrote the greek word: Δοκιμή

    4. Save and view the generic content item. The tooltip will become curropted.

This does not happen if you type an external site insteadin the Url Address Textbox.

    Hello,

how are you guys proceeding with fixing this issue? It is rather annyoing for us.

I just tried to fix a link tooltip where Sitefinity changed the name of a swiss town

    Lützelflüh

    into this:

    Lützelflühh

It does not look good at all when our website displays tooltips with this kind of garbage in it. A fix would be highly appreciated.

I have just discovered that Sitefinity now serves a general content item which includes 6 links containing a few international characters so very much corrupted that the rendered size of the item content is 360 kBytes (!!) instead of  5 kByte.

This is so severe that we now have changed all of our pages to some standard tooltip which does not contain any international characters.

This bug has caused us a lot of work and trouble.

Let me know whetehr you need more samples of this problem.

    Hi Guys,

I wonder if anyone have tried the two KB articles that we provided:

They describe the exact case you have. This is more an Editor and Browser behavior so I suggest you implementing the article's code and try if you get the same results.

    Kind regards,

    Hello Georgi,

    thank you for responding.

Frankly speaking, I do not feel to implement this solution. I can't start to introduce a javascript filter for any possible unicode character my users might use (French, German). I strongly feel that, dealing here with Telerik RadEditor, the industry-leading editor, I just can't be bothered with spending my time with solving such a basic issue with custom code. I do spend our money with Telerik to NOT have to deal with such basic stuff.

Forgive me for reacting harsh in this. Usually I am open for playing along in any way possible, and willing to help solve issues, but in this case this is, in my view, not acceptable. May be I misunderstand the issue... but basically this I just want to work :-)

    Regards, Mikael
