    Hi,

Has anyone develop a google maps control (or microsoft live earth)? I think this would be very useful to be included as module, since for various types of websites build with sitefinity (ex real estate, tourist etc) would be very necessary.

    Best regards

    Hi Vagelis,

We have created an ascx prototype of the google maps specifically for Sitefinity  and are currently converting it to a control in a dll, it is still a little rough though, and probably doesn't have all the functionality you need it is only designed currently to display someones location on a map given an address.  I can put up a sample of it if you want to see it?

If we were to develop it further what sort of functionality do you think it would need?

I did found when I was researching this guy who has basically transposed the whole GoogleMaps API into a .Net Wrapper.

    http://www.codeproject.com/aspnet/LatLaysFlat-Part1.asp
    http://www.codeproject.com/aspnet/LatLaysFlat-Part2.asp

    You might find that useful

    Hi Sean,

Glad to hear that . Is it possible to view a sample so that I can say what else may be useful to add?

    My best

    Hi Vagelis,

I am hoping to put up this afternoon (Australia Time) a sample with some of the properties currently implemented.  As I said it is very basic, so don't get your hopes up too much :)

I will post again here when it is ready.

    Thanks
    Sean

    Hi Vagelis,

Ok I have put up a sample of the google maps component.  As I said before it is still quite basic at this stage. I would be very interested on your feedback of it and what sort of features you expect of it.  It is really still in a beta stage so if you see any obvious bugs please let us know.

    Regards
    Sean

    Hi Sean,

It looks very impressive at first glance. It almost have all needed features a visitor would need (toolbar, various types of navigation etc). As a control how easy is to add points of interest in a specific area? Also toolbar options can be hiden to users and work with some default options?

Any way it's very promissing and I'm willing to help you on testing it.

    Best regards

    Vagelis

We have created an instance of the Google Map API in the v2.5 and have converted it over for the 3.0 version as well. While I don't have a link for the 3.0 version, I do have a link to the 2.5 version. The map uses an xml file to generate the drop down list for the locations and it is also used to populate the icons on the map.

    Nice map Jim, looks good!

Vagelis, Thanks for the feedback.  Currently the map component is really only for displaying a "location" type page for the user.  I have plans to be able to supply the map and XML file with the markers defined in it to allow multiple markers to be placed on a map, it just isn't done yet.  Yes I am going to build into the component the options to control some of the default toolbar options.  Thanks for the offer of testing, once I have a beta version up and running I will contact you.

If you are more urgent maybe Jim can help you out?

    Regards
    Sean

    Hello Jeff Giesbrecht,

There is already such built-in module, it's called Events.
We ship Sitefinity with several modules, but don't offer additional modules for downloading. We have several example modules in our blogs. We and our community are always glad to help with guidance how to develop given modules and controls, so we would be glad to answer all of your questions and give you further assistance.

    Hi Vagelis,

Yes I had done that extending, basically you can supply it the url of a KML file which will overlay on top of the map.  If you would like the component please email me:
sean.molam [at] zimweb.com.au.  I unfortunately though can't give too much support at the moment  just things are a little crazy but I will try as much as I can.

    Cheers

    Hey Georgi,
I checked out the Events module, indicated all required location information and set the necessary geomapping settings for Google Maps API like the key and API address but whenever I take a look at the Events page of the live site, I don't see any map. It it supposed to "magically" appear there after all the steps I mentioned or have I failed at doing something? Thanks.

Edit: Oops it's there already, but the map contains nothing, just a marker on a blue background. It looks like it did not pick up the location information specified.

Hey Georgi, to complicate things further, selecting List & page display mode for Events does not show any Google map at all.

    Hi jkregala,

Verify that Geographic map (to set details, use Advanced section text settings) is checked in the control designer.

Where do I set the latitude and longitude? I thought the map will automatically generate the map based on the location information provided in the Events control.

    Hi jkregala,

When you create or edit an Event item there is a control - GeomappingEditor that you should use to enter the geomapping data for your event.

Any updates on this sir? I can't seem to find any fields where I could enter the latitude and the longitude in the Events module's edit or create event pages despite having mapped the GeomappingEditor control. Thanks. :)

Thank you! That was certainly most illuminating. I see that my problem lies in the Geomapping Settings. I noticed that it does not accept the API key and address I got from Google maps (since after saving the settings and going back to that same page later, the key is gone). Since the Sitefinity CMS I am using is hosted in an internal server, do you think it's causing an ill effect?

    Hello jkregala,

The key should be added in the web.config under the events node. The key cannot be removed with code from the web.config. The key could be removed from your page when it is not valid and generally the map is not generated.

    Hello jkregala,

We do not have this control out of the box, but there is a partner of us that sells it on marketplace
