Did anyone have issues with Sitefinity on a shared hosting plan? I am hosting with Crystaltech and wondering if they support it.

    Thanks,
    Abhijit

    Hello Abhijit,

The only major hindrance you may encounter in a shared-hosting environment is medium trust environment enabled because a number of Sitefinity features must be disabled in order to work in it. More information on this issue can be found in our User Manual, page 187, section 18. Medium Trust Support.

We have had occasional reports that some hosting providers have stricter security policies which may break some of our features, but we still cannot provide a full report on this subject.

On a side note, we have a nice KB article on how to install Sitefinity on DiscountASP.NET hosting plan.

    Hope this helps!

    Kind regards,
    Tihomir

My host is on a Medium trust level and I followed the instructions in the manual. I reviewed the DiscountASP.net example, but they don't even match the manual. Is the manual missing something?

    I received the following exception:

Description: The application attempted to perform an operation not allowed by the security policy.  To grant this application the required permission please contact your system administrator or change the application's trust level in the configuration file.

    Hello Abhijit,

This is just a quick follow-up.
After reviewing your problem once again, we have one more question - can you tell us what do you mean by "I reviewed the DiscountASP.net example, but they don't even match the manual.". Do you mean the User or Developer manual? If you find something wrong in either our manual, or our KB article, we will be really grateful if you point it to us so that we can improve our support!

Thanks for your cooperation in advance.

    Kind regards,
    Tihomir

    Sorry I wasn't clear.

In the DiscountASP.net example, the instructions talk about disabling the healthMonitoring. However, the Medium Trust Support section in the User Guide also suggests that both PageWorkflow and the SitefinityXml XmlProvider be disabled.

Regarding the KB article (http://www.sitefinity.com/support/knowledge-base/kb-article/b1154K-mkd-b1154T-cgb.aspx) on installing SiteFinity on DiscountASP.Net.  The instructions state to disable workflow.  Does this mean that Workflow will not work in shared hosting (or at least on DiscountASP.Net) or this is just a recommendation for a vanilla install?

    Hello Brook,

Yes, it means that Sitefinity will not work with Workflow enabled in shared hosting environment.
We have plans for improving or medium trust support, but we cannot commit any time frame for it.

Please bring me up-to-date on the shared hosting/medium trust problems with Sitefinity.  I convinced my boss to go with Sitefinity when I was told hosting would be done in-house.  Now they want to host outside and not pay for dedicated server.  Workflow is a MUST.  I appreciate your feedback.

I would also like to know the status of Workflow for Discount ASP.Net specifically. It appears this was an issue about 1 year ago but that hopefully has been resolved ?!?

    Thanks

    To all
Just got notification from DiscountASP.NET that they only provide shared hosting and Full Trust is enabled on these accounts.

P.S. DiscountASP.NET support reponse time less than two hours...yah, Telerik was faster still ;-)

    Hi,

Good to hear that DiscountASP.net configure their hosting plan with full trust more.

The ASP hosting plan from SeekDotNet.com also support the full trust mode. It will be ideal to host it with Sitefinity website.

    Cheers!

We are running Sitefinity on Mosso Cloud / RackSpace Cloud and they have started swapping us over to the medium trust environment. I followed the instructions for the DiscountASP but the main difference is we are using MySQL instead of SQL Server. It appears your data components for MySQL don't work on medium trust, is this true?

What can we do to fix this? I have a couple sites down right now so this is pretty urgent.

    Hello Jonathan Marbutt,

We support MySQL with Medium Trust level. But you need to convert your current database from SQL to MySQL. There are third party tools that you can use.

One thing to consider about CrystalTech, they charge $5 each time you import an MDF file into SQL Server 2008.
